Why is it called Mississippi Sin?
Great question! This delicious dip gets its name because it’s so indulgent, it feels almost “sinful” to eat! The “Mississippi” part likely comes from Southern roots, as it’s a popular dish at gatherings across the Southern USA where hearty, crowd-pleasing recipes are a staple. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a different type of bread?
Yes! Any crusty bread loaf will work in place of a loaf of French bread. If you prefer, you don’t have to use a bread loaf at all. Just place the dip ingredients in a small casserole dish, top with cheese, cover will foil and bake.
Can I make this dip ahead of time?
Yes, you can! You can prep the dip mixture and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready, fill the bread and bake.
How do I reheat the dip?
Reheat in the oven at 350°F until it’s warmed through. If the bread starts to brown too much, cover it loosely with foil.
Can this be made in a crockpot?
Absolutely, a slow cooker is fantastic for keeping this warm. See the notes box below for instructions.

Recipe Ingredients and Possible Substitutes
The full list of ingredients and amounts is found in the printable recipe card below.
- French bread. This makes the perfect edible bowl for the dip! Any crusty loaf will work, or just use an ovenproof bowl if you prefer. You can also use a round loaf of bread, just hollow it out and you’re good to go.
Skip the bread bowl and using a baking dish, or slow cooker if you prefer. - Cream cheese. Go for full-fat or reduced-fat, whichever you like.
- Shredded cheese. I use sharp cheddar cheese. It gives a sharp, cheesy kick! Feel free to swap in any cheese blend you love.
- Sour cream. Adds that creamy tang and smooth texture.
- Ham. Salty and savory—it’s classic here, but you can switch it up with bacon or bacon bits. I use pre diced ham, but you can get deli ham and dice it up or use leftover ham from a holiday meal.
- Green onions. Mild onion flavor and a little color boost.
- Worcestershire sauce. Adds a salty, savory flavor.

Get prepped
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
Prepare the bread
Slice off the top of the bread loaf and cut out the center of the bread, leaving about a 1-inch shell. Tear the removed bread into bite-sized pieces and set aside in a bag or container to keep fresh.
Make the dip
In a large bowl, blend the softened cream cheese, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth.
Fold in the cheese, ham, and green onions. Mix until everything is combined. Taste and season with salt and pepper if needed.
Fill the bread
Spoon the dip mixture into the hollowed bread oaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Top with extra cheese.
Bake the dip
Bake for 30 minutes, or until the dip is hot and bubbly and the bread is golden brown.
Serve
Let the dip cool slightly, then serve with the reserved bread pieces, crackers, or fresh veggies for dipping.
Crockpot Instructions
Prepare the dip mixture as usual by mixing the cream cheese, sour cream, shredded cheddar, ham, and seasonings.
Transfer to the crockpot. Instead of hollowing out a bread loaf, spoon the dip mixture into the crockpot.
Cook on low for about 2-3 hours or until hot and bubbly. You’ll want to stir occasionally to ensure even heating.
Serve with bread cubes, crackers, or veggies. You can keep it on the “warm” setting for as long as you need, so it stays creamy and ready for dipping!
I like to use a “little dipper” for smaller amounts (affiliate link).
Kylee’s Notes
Keep an eye on the bread. When baking, check occasionally to ensure the bread doesn’t over-brown. Cover it loosely with foil if it’s getting too dark before the dip is ready.
Soften the cream cheese. Make sure your cream cheese is softened before mixing to get a super smooth dip.
Customize the flavor. Want a bit more kick? Add diced jalapeños, a dash of hot sauce, or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
