Fritters, initially made by dropping batter into hot oil, quickly became a popular treatment due to their crispy exterior and soft, sweet centre. As apples were readily available in Europe, it was only a short time before cooks began incorporating them into their fritter recipes.

The first recorded recipe for apple fritters dates back to 1660, and it was a simple recipe that called for sliced apples to be dipped in batter and fried. Over the years, apple fritter recipes evolved, adding various spices and ingredients to enhance flavour.

Today, apple fritters are still a beloved treat, and they can be found at bakeries and restaurants worldwide. While the recipe may have evolved over the centuries, the basic concept of a sweet, crispy fritter filled with juicy apples has remained unchanged, making it a timeless dessert that people of all ages can enjoy.

How to Make the Grated Apple Fritters?

I will show you how to make the apple fritters recipe step by step, and you will see how simple and quick it is.

Prepare the Apples

First, I will peel the apples and remove their spines (this is not necessarily necessary), so I will have less loss of apples.

I have seen that cutting apples into small cubes is preferred in most apple fritters recipes. I generally like to grate them, as I do now, on the large grater.

In my easy apple cake recipe, I add diced apples. Still, I always grate them in others, and here are some grated apple recipes, such as the apple shortcrust pastry recipe or the easy cinnamon apple pancakes recipe.

Now, I will squeeze the juice of half a lemon over them. Adding lemon juice to grated apples serves a few purposes in recipes such as grated apple fritters:

  • First, it helps prevent the grated apples from browning or oxidizing, making them look unappetizing.
  • Secondly, lemon juice adds a subtle tartness to the grated apples, which can balance out their natural sweetness.
  • Lastly, adding lemon juice to grated apples can also help tenderize them slightly by breaking down some cell walls. This can make the grated apples more moist and flavorful in the final dish.

I mix the grated apples and leave them aside to make the dough for the fritters.

Make the Batter

My dough for these apple fritters is a little more special than other recipes because I will not use liquid ingredients like milk or melted butter.

In a bowl, I will add the solid ingredients: flour, baking powder, sugar, vanilla sugar and a little salt and mix them. I add the eggs individually and mix them with a wooden spoon or whisk to incorporate them into the flour. You will see that you will get a thick and crumbly dough.

Add the grated apples with all the juice and incorporate them into the dough, this time by hand. The composition will become softer and moister this time, like some between dough and batter.

Fry the Fritters

I will heat about 250 ml (a cup) of sunflower oil (or other vegetable oil) in a pan. The pan must have plenty of oil, at least 1.5-2 cm thick. With a spoon, which I dip in oil, I will form round pieces of this dough and fry them, preferably at a medium temperature, so they don’t burn.

Do not fry too many fritters at once because the oil cools down, and they will be soaked in oil.

After a minute or two, they can turn to the other side and continue to fry for about another minute after they have become copper colour.

When the apple fritters are cooked, I take them out on a plate covered with a paper towel to absorb the excess oil.

I let them cool down a little, and that’s it; they can be served. This was my grated apple fritters recipe; straightforward and quick but delicious.

Serving the Dessert

The apple fritters can be served in various ways, depending on your preference. I do it with a delicious strawberry jam, but here are a few more ideas for you:

  • Plain: You can serve the grated apple fritters as they are without additional toppings or accompaniments.
  • Powdered sugar: Dust the fritters with powdered sugar for a sweet finish.
  • Cinnamon sugar: Combine cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle the mixture over the fritters.
  • Honey: Drizzle honey over them for a touch of sweetness.
  • Maple syrup: Serve with warm maple syrup for a classic breakfast treat.
  • Whipped cream: Top the fritters with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  • Vanilla ice cream: Serve it with a scoop for a decadent dessert.
