Aldi Carnitas

This Aldi Pork Carnitas Recipe uses the carnitas seasoned boneless pork shoulder that is pre-seasoned with carnitas seasoning from Aldi. Sometimes Pork Shoulder is also referred to as Pork Butt but it’s the same cut of meat. This recipe is delicious and so easy to make in your instant pot. It’s a very economical meat as well. You can serve these many ways. I make Carnitas Burrito Bowls, Carnitas Tacos, Carnitas Enchiladas and Carnitas Burritos all with this same pork roast. This meal is great for a get together as well. I love to make a taco bar with 3 different meats for the tacos. I serve chicken, Pulled Pork Carnitas and Spicy Enchilada chicken as the proteins for the taco bar. I always serve rice and cauliflower rice with my taco bar for those who prefer a burrito bowl to a tortilla and the cauliflower rice for those who are keto or low carb!

Can I make this Aldis Instant Pot Pork Carnitas recipe in my slow cooker?

Yes, you can make this recipe in your slow cooker. Follow all the same directions, but in the slow cooker you would set it to cook on low for 6 hours.

Whether you are serving these carnitas as a taco bar, or burrito bowls you will want lots of toppings for them.

How to Serve Your Aldis Carnitas

I love to serve my Carnitas on a taco bar with all my favorite toppings. I use a rice our cauliflower base and serve as a burrito bowl if I’m not serving as Carnitas Tacos. When serving as Carnitas Tacos serve it like a taco on flour tortilla or hard corn taco shell.

Some recipes will crisp up the carnitas in the oven after pressure cooking on a sheet pan or cookie sheet. This is an optional step if you like your meat with an outer crisp on it.

Serve with black beans and rice or cilantro lime rice as a side dish.

Carnitas Taco Bar Toppings

  • Jalapenos

  • Shredded Cheese

  • Sour Cream

  • Lettuce

  • Fresh Pico de Gallo

  • Fresh Salsa

  • Fresh Chopped Cilantro

  • Crushed Tortilla Chips

  • Avacado

Jalapeños

Slice up your jalapeños for a great topping for your burrito bowls. If you like it really spicy then don’t remove the seeds. If you like it a little milder, then go ahead and remove the seeds.

Shredded Cheese

There are so many great cheeses you can use for this recipe. I typically stick with extra sharp cheddar, but Mexican cheeses are great on top of these burrito bowls too. It goes really well with queso fresco or manchego.

Sour Cream

A great way to save some calories in this recipe is to use light sour cream, but a for a richer taste use full fat sour cream.

Lettuce

I love shredded lettuce on anything Mexican. I usually buy the pre-cut shredded lettuce in the bags, but you can also shred your own lettuce. You should use iceberg lettuce for this recipe. The high water content lettuce gives a great crunch and can also mellow out some of the spice if you’ve made a hot version of these bowls.

Fresh Pico de Gallo

For the Pico de Gallo you can purchase a pre-made Pico de gallo, but you can easily make Pico de Gallo at home too. Check out our homemade Pico de Gallo recipe for details on how to make this simple add-on.

Fresh Salsa

You can purchase fresh salsa or make our super simple salsa recipe. I love to make fresh salsas in the summer time with fresh jalapeño peppers and fresh tomatoes from my garden. I love it so much I’m trying to grow jalapeños and cherry tomatoes in my Lettucegrow Farmstand inside right now. I have some small jalapeños and quite a few green cherry tomatoes that I hope will ripen. I put these in the farmstand as an experiment. I know people have had a lot of success with fruiting veggies outside in the farmstand, but I haven’t really had great production inside.

Fresh Cilantro

Cilantro really makes this dish come together. If you don’t like cilantro then I’d suggest substituting basil or another mild fresh herb to lend the earthy taste to tie this dish together.

Crushed Tortilla Chips

Crush up some organic gluten free tortilla chips if you like to add a little crunch to your burrito bowls.

Avacado

Dice some fresh avacado as a topping.

Why use Aldi pre-seasoned Pork Carnitas?

You don’t need to use the pre-seasoned Pork Carnitas from Aldi for this recipe, but the pre-seasoned meat does make this recipe super quick and easy for a busy weeknight meal. If you would prefer to buy a plain pork roast, then I would opt for a pork roast that is labelled either a Pork Shoulder Roast or a Pork Butt Roast.

Carnitas Tacos Shopping List

If you click on our Instacart Aldi shopping list for this recipe you can add all the ingredients to your cart and have them delivered to you in a couple hours. It’s much fresher than a shipped meal delivery kit and much less expensive. Your ingredients will be delivered from your local Aldi. If you don’t have an Aldi nearby, instacart will show your options from other stores!

Shopping at Aldi

I resisted shopping at Aldi for many years. I didn’t start shopping there until my youngest daughter was taking a theater class right next store to an Aldi. Why? I don’t know. I think maybe because they are smaller than your average supermarket? I thought they didn’t carry brand names? I thought I wouldn’t be able to get everything I needed in one trip? I’m not sure, but that was a little closed minded of me. When my kids were younger I did try to get everything in one trip because it was harder to get to multiple stores with the three of them in tow. This was before Instacart and other delivery services were mainstream.

In the past few years, I rarely buy brand name foods anyways, because I try to not buy much processed food. And I’m never been able to get everything at one store anyways. Maybe I just don’t like change…

and side note… Aldi does actually carry brand names of some things. This is a common misconception about Aldi. They don’t carry the selection you would see at Wegmans, Tops, Publix or other large supermarket chains, but they do carry some.

Anyways, now I know better!! Aldi is great. I get all my produce and meat there as well as many canned goods. I love their pastas. They have a ton of organic items and gluten free items and many specialty items. They don’t have a huge selection of exotic foods, or a huge selection of brand name foods, but if you don’t buy those items every week then Aldi is for you. Their prices are much much better than the larger chain supermarkets. If you haven’t tried Aldi yet, give it a try. Even if it’s not convenient in location, have it delivered with Instacart. Especially if you are trying to save money on groceries. You will see a significant difference in your total shopping bill. Aldi also doesn’t up-charge in Instacart for every item like other supermarkets do, so that’s another bonus of shopping there.

When I need brand name items I usually order for pick up from Target for those items. Target does not charge for pick services and they do not add any additional cost to each item when picking up. They have become very competitive in pricing of groceries in the past year. My local Target is usually at least a few cents less expensive for each item than my local Walmart and they have great sales if you are a member of Target Circle (their rewards program). You earn a small cash back on every item with the Target Circle program. You can also add offers to your account to get discounts on products.

Aldi and Target both have apps for your iphone or android. You can check their weekly flyers in your app for sales.

Using our Instacart Lists

All of our recipes have an Instacart List included that you can use to shop for the ingredients for the recipe. All of my lists are made for Aldi because I like to provide the most cost effective recipes I can to my readers, but if you prefer another store, you can just switch the store once you are logged into your Instacart account and the app will suggest the closest items in the list. To get more information on how to use our Instacart Lists see our Instant Meal Kits article. Check out our Instant Pot Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe or our Gluten Free Minestrone Recipe with integrated Instacart Lists.
