Pigs in a Blanket

The holiday season is about to begin, which means it is time to party with our near and dear ones. Christmas involves a lot of prep, especially when you're hosting. Amidst all the gifts-wrapping, and decorating the Christmas tree, the last thing you want is to be stressed over ridiculously difficult recipes. That's where this easy appetizer comes into play!

When it comes to holiday appetizers, nothing is as classic as Pigs in a Blanket. Delicious mini smokies are wrapped in flaky, buttery puff pastry dough and baked to perfection. They are one of my favorite snacks when hosting a party along with some of my other favorites such as Crispy Parmesan Potato Stacks , Brie Raspberry Bites and Easy Garlic Parmesan Knots.

Why is it called Pigs in a Blanket?

Sounds funny, doesn’t it? The term “pigs in a blanket” typically refers to hot dogs, in this case, mini cocktail smokies that are wrapped in a blanket of dough. The idea originated in the 1600s when farm workers would wrap meat in the dough for their lunches.

Why you will love these?
  • Easy to make: Easy to throw and made with just a handful of ingredients, this delicious appetizer will make your party season a breeze!
  • Can be prepped ahead of time: This is a great make-ahead recipe! To do so, just assemble them, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover them with plastic wrap and refrigerate. And, when you are ready to bake them, brush them with egg wash and put them inside the oven.
  • An absolute hit: These are a great hit with both kids and adults alike.

What to Serve with these?

Are you wondering what to serve with these little bites? When it comes to dips, nothing beats a good grainy mustard. Other options include (but are certainly not limited to) ketchup, honey mustard sauce, barbeque sauce, or even ranch dressing.

Extra Notes
  • If you can’t find mini cocktail smokies, you can use regular hot dogs for the recipe. Just cut your hot dogs into quarters and proceed with the recipe as is.
  • While I like to add a sprinkle of sesame seeds to my rolls, you can also bake them plain.
