Pro Tips

Here are a few tips to help you make this slow-cooker beef stroganoff recipe perfectly:

  • The beef broth really works best in this recipe, but you can also use chicken broth if you are in a pinch.
  • Add the cream cheese, and allow it to melt completely. I like to cut the cream cheese up into chunks so that it melts quickly. Once the cream cheese is melted give it a good stir before serving it over the noodles or rice.
  • You could also serve this beef stroganoff over mashed potatoes if your family prefers.
  • For easy clean up you can spray your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray or you can use a slow cooker liner.
  • If you are not a fan of fresh mushrooms you can use canned sliced mushrooms or leave them out altogether.
  • Instead of beef stew meat, you can use sirloin steak or chuck roasts cut into strips to make this meal.
  • If you don’t have beef broth on hand, you could also use beef bouillon.
  • You can add more flavor to your broth by adding Worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, or cloves of garlic to the soup mixture.
  • I prefer to use full-fat sour cream, but the lower-fat options would work for this meal also.
  • If you are not a fan of onions you can leave them out and use a teaspoon of onion powder instead for the same taste.
  • Be sure to boil your pasta according to the package directions before adding this delicious beef mixture on top.

  1. 4 stars
Not for a crockpot, we use a Dutch oven, but beef stroganoff is more okay for leftovers. Just heat the leftovers, cook some egg noodles fry up some mushrooms (we have easy access in Philadelphia, in fact we produce most mushrooms sold in the US nearby), add some sour cream and you’re done. Maybe some butter.

    • I’m glad you liked the recipe cooked in a dutch oven. It is nice when a recipe still tastes delicious the next night. Thanks for the suggestions on what you add to your leftovers.

  2. You note that you could use beef bouillon if you don’t have beef broth on hand and you certainly could. You could also use Better than Bouillon Premium Roasted Beef Base. The beauty of this is that it will keep in your refrigerator for many months – 1 t. BtB + 1 C. of water + 1 cup of bouillon. Too often when I’d open a can of beef broth I wouldn’t need all of it, put the leftovers in the frig and it would spoil before I needed it. Note that Better Than Bouillon products come in all kinds of varieties – chicken, ham, vegetable base, garlic base and many more. I always keep a couple of jars in my refrigerator. If your local supermarket doesn’t have it, Amazon will.
