Are you looking for a fresh and light burger option? If so, this mozzarella avocado and tomato burger is for you! So many specialty burgers are topped with fried onion rings, pulled pork or other meat, or just so many toppings you can’t even imagine how to eat it. Sticking with just three simple and fresh toppings, this burger has plenty of flavor but keeps the toppings simple and light so you feel better eating it.

As part of our Burger of the Month series, we wanted a slightly lighter option as we were dreaming of warm summer days right around the corner. We can’t wait to enjoy these easy burgers while sitting outside and enjoying some much needed nice weather!

Mozzarella Avocado and Tomato Burger Ingredients

This simple 5 ingredient recipe creates a light and fresh tasting burger perfect for any time of year. Here is everything you need to make it:

Getting fresh mozzarella and ripe produce is the secret to making this burger taste so good. Any fresh mozzarella will do. And for the produce, the avocado should give slightly underneath your fingers when you squeeze it, and the tomato should be shiny with a smooth uniform skin. Follow those easy tips and you’ll be sure to have flavorful, ripe produce!

How To Make A MAT Burger

Making this burger is also a breeze. The only part that may be a little different than making a normal cheeseburger is that the fresh mozzarella takes longer to melt than a slice of American or cheddar cheese. To help it melt fully, put the mozzarella on your burger as soon as it’s flipped.

  1. Prepare the toppings – slice the mozzarella, slice the vine tomato, and mash the avocado – and set aside.
  2. Grill classic burger patties until desired doneness, topping each with a slice of mozzarella cheese right after the burgers are flipped for maximum melting time.
  3. While the burgers are cooking, spread an even layer of mashed avocado on the bottom halves of the burger buns.
  4. Transfer cooked patties to buns, placing them on top of the mashed avocado. Top each burger with a slice of tomato and then close the buns.
  5. Serve with your favorite side, a cold lager, and enjoy!

If you are cooking these burgers on the stove, try covering them with a lid once you put the cheese on. This will help the cheese melt fully before the burgers are done. This will help make sure you don’t end up with non-melted cheese, or worse, an overcooked burger.

Helpful Tips To Make Sure Your Burgers Turn Out Great

  • We cook on cast iron, so it’s important to get consistently-sized, well-packed patties. That’s why we use the Cuisinart Stuffed Burger Press to form our patties.
  • It is important to get the mozzarella on the patty as soon as you flip it to give it enough time to melt. You can even cover the pan with another cast iron skillet or glass lid to make sure the cheese is super melty.
  • Although topping the burger with slices of avocado may look nicer, it makes it very difficult to eat. It is better to mash the avocado and spread it on the bottom bun for a slightly cleaner and easier to eat meal.

Notes

Classic Burger Patties: This is our original recipe for delicious homemade burger patties. But we totally get it if you want to use frozen or pre-made patties to make this dish a little easier!
Melting the cheese: To get extra melty cheese on your burgers, try covering the pan with a lid! (If you’re grilling on the stove like we do).
Serving suggestions: This “healthy” burger pairs well with a side of sweet potato tots (or sweet potato fries) and a crisp, light beer.
