stir tequila cocktail with a bar spoon

Top off with a splash sparkling water and give it one more gentle stir with the bar spoon. I love using San Pellegrino Essenza sparkling water in the dark morello cherry flavor. It also comes in a blood orange and raspberry flavor that would work perfectly here too.

add sparkling water to tequila cocktail

This water adds an amazing finishing fruity essence to the cocktail. I highly recommend using this sparkling water to finish the cocktail, but if it is not available, use a good quality mineral sparkling water to finish the cocktail. Something like berry flavor La Croix works as well.

Can I make this in a cocktail shaker?

build red wine drink in a shaker if desired

Yes, if desired, you could build part of the cocktail in a cocktail shaker.

  1. In a cocktail shaker, pour the red wine, simple syrup, blue curaçao, and silver tequila.
  2. Fill the shaker with ice about three-quarters of the way and put the lid on.
  3. Shake vigorously until the ingredients are chilled and combined.
  4. Now strain this mixture into a tall slender glass filled with fresh ice.
  5. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice and top off with sparkling water.
  6. Garnish with sliced cherries and lime wedges.

Can I Mix Red Wine with Tequila?

squeeze in fresh lime

Yes, you can mix red wine with tequila, but you should keep some careful considerations in mind. They are both boozy ingredients so choose to mix them in small, balanced quantities. Drinks with multiple strong ingredients may overwhelm the system if not measured with care. When in doubt, follow a recipe or search for some guided steps and examples when looking for a cocktail that combines ingredients in such a manner.

What Red Wine Can You Mix with Tequila?

splash in silver tequila

A simple inexpensive dry red wine with no sugary taste works best. You are better able to control the sweetness this way when adding the simple syrup. It gives you better control over the balance and final flavor in the cocktail. Red wines like pinot noir or merlot work nicely. They are easy drinking dry red wines that boast their own notes of fruit while adding a level of natural acidity that contributes to the character of this delicious red wine tequila cocktail.

What Type of Tequila Can I use for a red wine cocktail?

Stick with your favorite good quality silver tequila or ‘plata’ tequila. This type of tequila is young and meant to be opened and enjoyed today. Its flavor profile will be clean and refreshing without any complex notes of aging. Young tequilas are clear and usually boast notes of earthy agave piña, pepper, light spice, and herbs. Perfect for mixed drinks.

Equipment

1 Tall Slender Cocktail Glass

  • 1 ½ oz Red Wine - Dry – Such as Pinot Noir or Merlot
  • ½ oz Simple Syrup
  • ½ oz Blue Curacao
  • ½ oz Silver Tequila - Good quality – Your favorite brand
  • 1 wedge Fresh Lime - for squeezing in
  • 1 Sparkling Water - I used San Pellegrino Essenza – for topping off

Instructions

  • In a tall slender cocktail glass, pour in red wine and simple syrup. Combine these together with a bar spoon until well mixed and thoroughly combined.
  • Top the glass the rest of the way with fresh ice.  Top off the red wine mixture with a splash of blue curaçao,  silver tequila, and squeeze in the juice from 1 wedge of fresh lime. Stir everything together with a bar spoon until combined.
  • Top off with a splash of sparkling water and give it one more gentle stir with the bar spoon.
  • Garnish with fresh sliced cherries and lime wedges.  Serve immediately.  Serve chilled.

Notes

Adjust the sweetness accordingly to taste, if desired.
Remember that blue curaçao is a sweet citrus-flavored spirit and contributes sweetness to the cocktail as well. If adjusting the sweetness level, do so with small amounts of simple syrup, keeping the measurement of all other spirits the same as per the recipe. Finish balancing the adjusted sweetness with acidity/lime juice.
