I must admit that I don’t make or eat Green Split Pea Soup very often. I think the first time was when I went to Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton, CA. If you are going to try split pea soup for the first might as well be there.

My wife and I found the soup flavorful so I decided to try and make it at home. I asked my mom if she had an old family recipe for Split Pea Soup and come to find out that in Canada the split peas are yellow while here in the US they are green.

The green split peas that are commonly available here in the US tend to be a little sweeter than yellow split peas but both have similar nutrients. For this soup recipe, you can use either one. Use what you got!

Make sure you examine and remove any foreign material that might be included in the split peas. Sort and rinse well before using.

I usually have sherry on hand so that is what I used for this recipe but you can use any kind of white cooking wine when making this split pea soup recipe. You will not notice a difference in flavor when all is said and done.

In talking with others that often make split pea soup the diced ham and carrots are optional. I know my mom never adds carrots to her soup but will occasionally add some if she has any leftover ham.
