Is there anything better than freshly baked, dark chocolate, fudgy brownies? I think not. And what is even better are these Small Batch Coffee Brownies. I mean, what makes a perfect brownie? A crackly top, moist crumbs, cake-like brownies? Regardless of what makes for the best decadent brownies, nothing beats a warm fudgy brownie recipe. I’ve been enjoying making these small batch homemade brownies recently. I’m not a huge dessert eater, but sometimes I like a little special treat…which is why I love making these small batch coffee brownies. I wanted to switch up my original recipe for chocolatey small batch brownies and decided to add a little instant espresso powder…and it turned out amazing! The perfect treat that I needed this week to help with those chocolate cravings. And trust me, this small batch of brownies is way better than a box mix you’ll find at the grocery store.

For this coffee brownie recipe, I used a small loaf pan instead of a square pan. I also had to adjust the baking time to make sure it had the perfect fudgy texture, fudgy center and chewy edges.

What you’ll need to make these small-batch brownies…

  • 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter

  • 4 tablespoons of natural unsweetened cocoa powder, for the perfect chocolate flavour

  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of good quality olive or vegetable oil

  • 1 large egg, at room temperature

  • 1 tablespoon of espresso powder or instant coffee granules for a touch of coffee flavour

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/8 teaspoons of baking soda

  • 1/8 teaspoons of baking powder

  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips or a milk chocolate bar, chopped

How to make this small batch brownies recipe

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350 F.

  2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Add in the cocoa powder and instant coffee / instant espresso powder and whisk until well combined and butter is completely melted.

  3. Carefully transfer your hot butter mixture to a large bowl. Crack your egg into a small bowl, whisk, and add to your mixing bowl. Add in the white sugar, oil, vanilla and using an electric mixer, mix until well incorporated.

  4. Add in the chocolate chips and gradually add in the rest of the dry ingredients and mix until your batter is smooth.

  5. Line a 9×5 inch loaf pan with parchment paper and pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan.

  6. For best results, place the pan in the middle of the oven and bake for 30 minutes.

Once ready, the finished product is a small batch of fudgy coffee brownies. Serve with a sprinkle of powdered sugar; or a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of melted chocolate.
