  • White Box Cake Mix: Yellow works well too, make sure you get the kind with the pudding in the mix, such as Betty Crocker
  • Flour: All purpose flour is perfect, you will need 2/3 cup
  • Large Egg: Two large eggs for this recipe
  • Canola Oil: Or another neutral flavored vegetable oil
  • Sour Cream: Two Tablespoons

How to Make Cake Mix Sugar Cookies

These are the basic steps for making sugar cookies from cake mix. Please refer to the printable recipe card below for more detailed instructions and nutrition information. Please note: your nutrition information may vary by brand and by the topping used.

STEP 1: PREP

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then in a large bowl, stir together box of cake mix and flour. Add eggs, oil and sour cream, and mix on medium speed until well blended. (Batter should be stiff).

STEP 2: SCOOP

Next, line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or silicone mat and then use a medium cookie scoop or tablespoon to roll dough into approximately one-inch balls and place on a cookie sheet.

STEP 3: PRESS

Press 1- inch balls down with the back of a spoon dipped in sugar to flatten cookies to about a half inch thick.

STEP 4: BAKE

Bake approximately ten minutes until just set. Let cookies cool for a minute on the pan and then transfer to cooling rack until completely cooled. Finally, decorate as you desire for the holiday, birthday or whatever.

  • 18 oz box white or vanilla cake mix with pudding in the mix, Betty Crocker is what I normally use
  • cup all purpose flour

    If there were a million stars to rate this recipe I would give it a million stars. These cookies are soooooo delicious. They remind me of the Soft Batch sugar cookies that were out in the 80’s I think.
    I’ve never had cookies like this. Soft as pillows and so easy. Not overly sweet, just right imo. Bake them for the time called for and you will not be disappointed.
    I used white super moist cake mix from Betty Crocker. Might try other flavors in future.
    I don’t really like to bake that often because most cookies turn out to flat but I will for sure make these many times.
