- It is a fried dessert, and everyone knows that anything deep-fried probably tastes good.
- It is coated in delicious cinnamon sugar. Cinnamon has to be that best topping for most desserts right?
- It has a custard like texture on the inside, however, it does not taste raw.
What makes churros different from a fried donut
Churros are a precooked dessert. That means that you ‘cook’ the dough then refrigerate it before you fry it. This gives churros the unique texture it has it has, which is a crispy outer layer and a soft custard-like inside.

The first step is to ‘precook’ the dough. We do this by melting the butter, water, salt, vanilla, and sugar in a small pot on low-medium heat. Once everything has melted and combined, add your flour to the mixture. THIS WILL CLUMP UP YOUR MIXTURE, which is very normal. You need to use a wooden spoon to combine everything together. It will feel like a mini arm workout afterward. After all that work remove your pot from the heat and add your egg. Mix with a wooden spoon until it is all done and mixed well.
Now that your dough is formed, pipe your dough onto parchment paper and refrigerate it for 15 minutes. While your dough is in the refrigerator, preheat your sunflower oil, (that is enough to deep fry), on medium heat.
How thick churros dough should be:
Churros should be about 1cm in breadth and about 8-10 cm long. Making them too thick could affect the cooking time for your churros.
If you do not have a piping bag, you could take small pieces of the churro dough and roll it out in your hand until it is the right size. It does not have to be perfect, the measurements were just a guideline.

- 1 1/8 cups water
- 75 grams unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 1/4 cup flour
- 1 medium egg
cinnamon sugar for the churros
- 1 tbsp cinnamon powder
- 1/2 cup brown sugar

- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

- Heat your water, butter, salt, vanilla and sugar to a small pot on medium heat. Allow it to melt and mix well.
- Stir your pot to make sure that everything is combined. Add your flour to the mixture and stir well with a wooden spoon. It will clump up, which is very normal but you need to make sure you stir mix well until all the clumps are gone and your dough is smooth.
- Once your dough is smooth, remove your pot from the heat and add your egg. Mix well until your dough is nice and soft and non-stick.

- If you can, add your dough to a piping bag and pipe small straws of churro dough onto parchment paper. About 1cmX 8 cm. If you cannot access a piping bag take small portions of the churro dough and rolls it in your hand until you get a thin cylindrical shape.
- Refrigerate this dough for about 15 minutes. in the meantime prepare your oil for frying and cinnamon sugar.

- Add the brown sugar and cinnamon into a medium bowl and mix well.

- Add canola or sunflower oil enough for deep frying into a small pot on medium heat. your oil is hot enough when it starts to move in a circular motion.
- Take your churro straws ( about 5 at a time) and fry them for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Or until the churro is golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Once your churros have cooked immediately add them to the cinnamon sugar ,and coat them well.
