What is Whipped Coffee?
Whipped coffee is a delicious frothy coffee drink made with instant coffee, water, and sugar. It is typically whipped until creamy and fluffy and then served over hot or cold milk. Even though the recipe is well known in the name of beaten coffee, Frappe, Batido, frothy coffee, and cloud coffee in many countries, it became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as Dalgona Coffee.
Dalgona Coffee became a trend in South Korea during the social distancing and then spread worldwide. The term Dalgona refers to a sugar candy that looks similar to the fluffy whipped coffee hence the name.
This drink is super easy to make and an absolute treat to relish at any time of the day. You can make it with a hand whisk, electric beater, or a stand mixer. And all you need is under 15 minutes to make this delicious drink.
Ingredients and Substitutions Overview
- Instant Coffee Powder - It gives the best fluffy coffee drink and makes frothy and creamy coffee. Note ground coffee powder or previously ground coffee bags do not work for this recipe
- White Sugar - I have used white sugar for whipping, but you can also use raw, brown, or coconut sugar
- Hot Water - Hot water makes the whipping process faster compared to cold water, so I suggest the same to save some time
- Milk - I have used cold whole cow milk and you can use Almond Milk, Oat Milk, or cashew milk for vegan versions. And you can also use hot milk if you love to make a hot version

Chef's Notes and Tips
- I've used instant coffee granules to create this whipped coffee, and you can also opt for instant coffee powder for similar results. Additionally, instant espresso can be used for the same fluffiness, but be cautious as it imparts a stronger flavor than instant coffee powder.
- To expedite the whipping process, use warm or hot water instead of cold water. This not only saves time but also enhances the coffee's fluffiness.
- For sweetening, I've chosen white sugar, but brown sugar, raw sugar, or coconut sugar can provide comparable results. Sugar plays a crucial role in stabilizing the foam and achieving a nice, fluffy coffee, ensuring the cream remains in the same state for extended periods.
- Maintain a balance by using equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water, resulting in the perfect fluffiness and creamy texture. If you prefer a sweeter drink, feel free to add a sweetener to your milk.
- While an electric hand beater speeds up the whipping process, a hand whisk is a viable alternative. However, avoid using a spoon or fork, as this can be tiring and time-consuming.
- Opt for a wide bowl to allow proper air circulation in all directions, facilitating effective whipping. Using small containers or mugs may lengthen the process.
- Serve this delightful whipped coffee, also known as dalgona coffee, over cold or hot milk for a delightful morning breakfast, mid-day refreshment, or evening snack.
