Recipe highlights
There are SO many reasons why this recipe is AMAZing!
Firstly the Air Fryer cooks the chicken so thoroughly! Every bite is juicy, succulent and tender.
The rub takes about 2 mins to get onto the chicken and adding the wings to the basket another 1 minute.
So it is a quick and easy recipe that works!
Serve the wings as appetizers, finger food, a game day party snack or dinner with a salad.
They are versatile and lend themselves to so many delightful pairings!
Ingredients
The ingredients you need are shown in the photo below, they are all simple and can be found at the local shop (you might already have some of them!)
As you can see, the recipe calls for:
- Chicken wings (nibblets)
- Dry rub (chicken seasoning)
- Spray olive oil (optional)
This simple combination is all that is needed. For an alternative rub you might like to try the homemade jerk seasoning (maximum flavor!)
Instructions
As you can see in the photos below, the whole recipe involves quick, easy steps!
- Add chicken wings to zip lock bag and sprinkle with dry rub (Photo 1)
- Spray the Air Fryer basket with olive oil to prevent sticking (Photo 2)
- Add seasoned wings in one flat layer to the basket (Photo 3)
- Spray the wings with a small amount of oil (Photo 4)
Top tip 1: You can skip the spray of olive oil for a 'healthier' approach, however, it does save clean up if you use it. So a little bit of spray, never goes astray!
- Cook the chicken wings for 10 mins (Photo 5)
- Then flip and continue cooking (Photo 6)
I find the best method to cook wings in the Air Fryer is to let them cook initially for 10 mins, then flip them (use tongs) and cook them for a further 15-20 mins.
This ensures both sides of the wings have deliciously golden brown skin.
If you want to combine the seasoning and oil to start, then massage over the chicken that will work too. Have a look at that method in my Air Fryer Roast Chicken recipe.
The main difference between the 2 is that the olive oil spray method uses slightly less oil.
It is not just the look of the wings from the Air Fryer you will love. The taste, texture and smell are all to be devoured or delighted in!
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to cook wings in an Air Fryer?
Raw (unfrozen) chicken wings will take 25-30 minutes to cook in an Air Fryer.
Seasoning the chicken legs with dried herbs and a little oil ensures that the wings will be full of flavor and cooked to perfection!
Do you put dry rub on wings before or after cooking?
I recommend adding the dry rub to the chicken wings before you cook them.
If you have a look at the photos in the instructions below, you will see that I do this using a zip lock bag and massaging the rub onto the wings.
It is optional to use olive oil for the recipe. However, I do recommend you use it.
The reason being two fold:
- To shorten the clean up time
- To ensure the skin of the wings doesn't dry out and burn
To serve, try pairing with a Quick Potato Bake, Duck Fat Roast Potatoes or Creamy Garlic Potatoes.

Expert tips
This is what I have learnt that will help you master the recipe from the 1st time and every following time:
- Use paper towel to ensure you pat the chicken wings dry to start (helps rub stick)
- Using a zip lock bag and massaging the dry rub onto the wings ensures they each get well coated on both sides
- Spray basket to save clean up time
- Pull the basket out by the handle to check how the wings are cooking in the 1st 10 mins to ensure the wings are flat with a little space
- There are so many sizes and types of Air Fryers that some will cook faster or slower depending on the model.
- More chicken wings will take longer to cook, give them space (not stacked, work in batches if needed)
- FYI my Air Fryer is a 7 litre basket version

Dry Rub Air Fryer Chicken Wings
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 700 grams chicken wings (drumettes) Note 1
- 2 tablespoon dry rub (chicken seasoning)
- spray olive oil
Instructions
- Turn the air fryer on to 180°C/350 F for 30 mins (preheat prior if model requires it)
- Use paper towel to pat chicken wings dry.
- Add chicken wings to a zip lock bag, sprinkle over dry rub, seal the bag and massage the rub over and around each wing
- Spray the basket of the Air Fryer with olive oil
- Use kitchen tongs to place the wings in one flat layer (they can touch, but don't stack them)
- Cook the wings for 10 mins, pull the basket out, place on a heat proof surface, use kitchen tongs to flip the wings, return the basket to the Air Fryer and cook for a further 15-20 mins
- Serve with Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce (optional, but delicious!)
Notes
- Note 1 9 out of10 times when I am making wings, I purchase the nibblets (pre cut wings). I like wings as they are smaller than breast or thighs and they are more 'snack/appetizer' like. You can use the whole wing, but you will need to work in batches to cook them.Â
- Note nutritional info for the recipe is based on 1 wing.Â
