๐Ÿฅ– Ingredients you’ll need

Homemade croutons are easy to make, tasty, and versatile with the amount of substitutions you can use to tailor them to your liking. Here’s what you’ll need to make them:

  • Rye bread: You can’t make croutons without bread, and rye bread is a base that you can’t go wrong with. If you don’t have rye bread, this recipe can be made with other breads like sourdough, French bread, and ciabatta.
  • Olive oil: Using a good oil is essential for adding rich flavor to croutons. Olive oil does just that for this recipe, but any oil will do if you don’t have olive oil on hand.
  • Salt and pepper: A little pinch of salt and pepper will add a kick of flavor.
  • Optional Ingredients: You can get creative with rye croutons by adding dried herbs of your choice. We recommend parsley, oregano, or basil! You can also use a little garlic powder for extra flavor.

Notes

  • Recipe notes: This crouton recipe is made with rye bread, but any type of bread can be used. We like ciabatta bread or a thick whole grain loaf for homemade croutons.
  • Leftovers + storage: After croutons have cooled, store in an airtight container at room temperature for 5 days, or in the refrigerator for 6-7 days. We do not recommend freezing as the croutons will lose their crisp texture after thawing.
  • Nutrition notes: This recipe uses all plant-based ingredients, making it suitable for vegan diets.
