Tandoori Chicken Burgers

Grilling season is finally upon us! With Memorial Day approaching it’s the perfect time to reveal my Tandoori Chicken Burgers. The tandoori marinade I use is a classic Indian marinade usually applied to bone-in chicken, which is then cooked in a clay oven. The chicken is very approachable and I’ve found it offered on most Indian restaurants’ menus. When you use the tandoori paste marinade, you can actually make anything “tandoori”. It’s easy to get super creative with the marinade! And that’s where these burgers come in!

These super savory, flavorful burgers come together in a few quick steps thanks to a store-bought tandoori paste. We’ll go ahead and add some extra seasoning, using spices that are also in the paste, to enhance the flavors. With a quick grill time, these are a great addition to a weekend grill out OR just a somewhat boring weeknight that could use a little Indian flair! My husband and I have really been enjoying these burgers paired with garlicky grilled buns, mint chutney, and baked sweet potato. I also definitely recommend topping these burgers with my own Quick Pickled Red Onions.

Here’s how to have some of these picture-perfect burgers of your own!

Making the Tandoori Chicken Burgers

In a large bowl, let’s combine the ground chicken with tandoori paste, an egg, breadcrumbs, and additional spices. Mix everything together thoroughly. Be careful not to let the breadcrumbs lump into one place. I prefer to just get in there with my hands! But if that’s not your jam then a fork works well to mix everything.

Get in there and mix that tandoori marinade into your ground chicken.

Next, separate the mixture into 4 even balls and shape each one into the shape of a burger patty.

Shape your ground chicken into your preferred patty shape.

Grill up your burgers! I found that they usually take 10 minutes per patty to cook through, flipping frequently to prevent scorching. I would also heavily encourage a meat thermometer here! Due to the color of the tandoori paste, the inside of the burger will look pink even when it’s cooked. So, I’ve appreciated using the meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is cooked through.

Once your burgers are done cooking, place them onto some garlic hamburger buns (add a little butter and garlic powder to a bun then toast the buns on the stove!), vegetables, pickled onions, and any other garnishes!

Happy Grilling!

Tandoori Chicken Burgers

An Indian twist on the classic grill out burger.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Course Dinner, Lunch, Main Course
Cuisine American, Indian
Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • 1 Grill (or Frying Pan)

Ingredients

  • 1 lbs Ground Chicken
  • 1 Egg
  • 3 tbsp Tandoori Paste (I really like Patak's, which I've usually found at most big-box grocery stores)
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Chili Powder (This is more for flavor. This dish is definitely not spicy. If you're nervous, you can easily omit this one!)
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1/2 cup Italian Bread Crumbs
  • Salt, to taste
  • Lemon juice (to taste)
  • 4 Hamburger Buns

Instructions

For the Burgers:

  • In a large bowl, mix together ground chicken, egg, tandoori paste, breadcrumbs, and seasoning.
  • Once thoroughly mixed, separate the meat into 4 even balls. Take each ball and separately flatten it to form a patty.
  • Heat a pan (or grill) and start cooking the patties (medium-high heat). Cook for about 5 minutes on each side until the patties are cooked through. *Check with a meat thermometer*
  • Remove from heat and garnish with a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • Set the burgers onto toasted buns adding any garnishes. I love including pickled onions and mint chutney on mine.

Notes

  • * If you're using a pan on the stove top, be sure to flip the burgers frequently. They tend to scorch quickly. This method also takes about 10 minutes on medium-high heat.
