A good friend of mine, Charles, shared his Classic Hummus recipe with me. He told me that he’s been making this simple hummus recipe for his family for decades.

There are many different flavors of hummus out there but this one is more of a classic hummus. Nothing fancy in this hummus recipe.

ingredients

Hummus is a popular dip or spread from the Middle East. It is typically made with Tahini, Olive Oil, Garlic and Garbanzo Beans (aka Chickpeas). It has the consistency of a creamy paste. Usually served with Pita or an assortment of vegetables.

If you don’t cook Middle Eastern dishes very often, a trip to your local grocery store might be in order as this hummus recipe requires Tahini.

I always have a couple of cans of Garbanzo Beans (Chickpeas) on hand but you might need to pick some up as well.

Tahini is a Mediterranean condiment made from sesame seeds. It is one of the main ingredients in hummus as well as other Mediterranean recipes like Baba Ganoush.

Personally I like to eat my Hummus with some Pita Rounds cut into wedges and warmed up in the toaster oven but you can serve Hummus with Baked Pita Chips or vegetables.

Hummus is relatively healthy as it’s quite low in cholesterol, and it also has a good amount of fiber. Just like most other recipes, moderation is the key here as it is a little high in carbs and all that fiber might lead to other “issues”.

You will need the following ingredients to make this Simple Classic Hummus recipe (see recipe card for quantities): Garbanzo Beans, Garlic Cloves, Fresh Lemon Juice, Tahini, Salt, Olive Oil and Cayenne Pepper.

  1. Add the garbanzo beans, lemon juice, garlic, salt and a drizzle of olive oil in a blender. Puree the mixture until the texture is smooth. Add more olive oil if needed to achieve a smooth texture.
  2. Remove the bean mixture from the blender and put it in a bowl.
  3. Stir in the tahini. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with cayenne pepper.
  4. Serve with Pita Chips, Pita Wedges or Vegetables.
