Grilled Tofu Tikka

Grilled Tofu with veggies is the perfect way to grill tofu packed with spicy tikka taste. Serve with a side of any salad for nice weekend dinner.

 

A perfect way to grill tofu and veggies for the upcoming grilling season. This grilled tofu tikka can be served in many variations. Serve as is as a starter/appetizer with a combination of cucumber feta salad. Toss this tofu tikka in a makinhi gravy to make tofu makihni curry to serve with rice , roti or naan.

 

Wrap a tortilla/roti or a cheese crisp filled with tofu tikka ,sliced/smashed avacodo for a lunch or dinner wrap.

 

INGREDIENTS FOR GRILLED TOFU TIKKA

    • Tofu : Use extra firm variety for this recipe. Drain the excess water from the tofu by using paper towels or lint free clean cotton towel.
    • Veggies : Choice of veggies vary from any kind of peppers(red,green,orange,yellow), mushrooms, onions(red or white), squash(green,yellow).
    • Hung Curd : Drain regular homemade yogurt in a soft cloth to squueze the extra water.
    • Lemon juice : Use to balance the spicy level. Replace with amchur powder.
    • Ginger Garlic Paste : Use this for taste , can totally skip , a personal preference to use while making tikka for curry.
    • Tandoori masala : This gives that tikka flavor to the recipe. Do not skip this if you need the authentic tandoori flavored recipe or else use garam masala.
    • Besan : Besan acts as a binding agent to bind the spices well with tofu. Skip this for a strict keto.
    • Other Spices : Cumin , Coriander and chili powders for extra taste and spices. Adjust as per taste.
    • Kassori Methi : This is dried fenugreek add extra sweetness to the recipe. optional if you wish to skip.
    • Mustard Oil : Mustard oil adds extra flavor to this recipe to take it to next level. To replace use any oil of choice.

HOW TO MAKE THE TOFU TIKKA SKEWERS?

To make the tofu or paneer tikka skewers, first we need to prepare the marination. When all the veggies and tofu soaked in marination, their awesome flavors are well obsorbed and taste splendid.

 

Prepare Marination:

While there are so many varaitions of marination, this special variation stands out from the rest with few secret ingredients. YES, Mustard Oil and Besan

Add hung curd, mustard oil, besan, chili powder, cumin and coriander powder and mix well. Add some lemon juice , salt and adjust salt and heat as per taste.

Drain water from the tofu.To drain water use a tofu strianer or wrap in a cotton towel to drain the excess water.

Cut all the veggies and tofu in big quarter size and mix well in the prepared marination.

Leave it marinated well for altleast 30 mins or more as time permits.

 

Soak the wooden skewers ahead in water for 30 mins. Skew tofu and veggies and set them aside to grill.

Cooking Options: 

 

There are different methods to cook these tofu skewers.

 

    • Using Grill : Preheat the grill to 400 degree F and when ready , spray oil and arrange the skewers in a single layer, cover and grill turning in between.
    • In the Oven : Preheat the oven to 400 degree F and in a baking set , arrange all the skewers and bake for 20 – 30 minutes turning them halfway till its baked.
    • On Stove top : Heat a tawa or dosa posa, spray some oil  cook them turning every 5 minutes. Cook all sides and grill on the fire finally to get the grilled feel.

Serve hot with chioce of chutney or as is. Since they are marinated so well, they taste good as is.  

TOP TIPS FOR THIS RECIPE
  1. Use Extra Firm tofu for this recipe and squeeze as much water as you can without breaking the tofu.
  2. Mustard oil adds nice flavor to this recipe, try to use it and you can spot the difference in taste.
  3. To make this recipe Vegan use vegan yogurt or cashew cream.
  4. For a Keto friendly recipe substitute besan with almond flour or you can skip the flour. Use sour cream in place of hung yogurt.
  5. Using regular yogurt to marinate results in a runny batter so prefer to use hung yogurt or drain water from yogurt by using a stariner.
  6. Besan helps to bind the marinating well, so your tofu veggies has a lot of marination on them.
  7. Alter the chioce of veggies as per season or availability.
  8. If grilling on a pan on stove top turn the skewers after every minute till done.

Grilled tandoori tofu with veggies is a vegetarian side dish, appetizer with a balance of flavors and tasty on its own or when served with minty yogurt/ any sauce.

Equipment

  • BBQ Grill or Grill Pan
  • Metal/Wooden Skewers (soak wooden skewers for 30 mins in water)

Ingredients

  • 6 Oz Extra Firm Tofu
  • ¼ cup onions
  • ¼ cup green peppers
  • ¼ cup red peppers
  • ¼ cup cubed squash/zucchini

Marinate

  • 2 tbsp Mustard Oil or any oil
  • ¼ cup Hung Curd
  • 1 tsp red chili powder add more as per spicy level
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 2 tsp tandoori masala powder
  • 1 tsp besan
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice half small lemon
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste optional
  • ½ tsp kasoori methi
