Chocolate Chip Buns WITHOUT Yeast

Chocolate Chip Buns WITHOUT Yeast

Easy and delicious chocolate chip buns made with baking powder instead of yeast in no time. No “waiting time” just make the dough, shape it into buns and bake.

These no yeast chocolate chip buns are delicious, so easy and only take 30 minutes to make including preparation time. Easy enough to be made by beginner bakers too.

All you have to do is combine all the ingredients (except the chocolate chips) to make the dough, knead the dough for a minute, fold in chocolate chips, shape and bake. Enjoy the buns for breakfast, afternoon tea /coffee or as a travel snack.

What you’ll need to make quick chocolate buns

  • 300 g (10.6 oz/ 2 ½ cups) plain flour (all purpose flour) plus extra for dusting
  • 1 medium egg
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 150 g (5.3 oz) Greek yogurt
  • 65 g (2.3 oz/ about 1/3 cup ) sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) chocolate chips

Vanilla: This recipe call for vanilla sugar. But feel free to use about 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (just use 1/2 tablespoon more sugar if you’re using vanilla eextract.

How to make no yeast chocolate chip buns

Begin by preheating the oven to 180°C (392 °F) with both up and low heat. Next, separate the egg, keep the egg yolk aside for later.

In a bowl combine yogurt, baking powder, flour, milk, oil, sugar, a pinch of salt and the egg white and knead for about one minute (you don’t want to over knead the dough!).

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for another minute.

Then knead in the chocolate chips (leave some to decorate the buns) and shape the dough into a long baguette form. Cut the baguette roll into approximately 10 equal rolls. (Cut the roll in the middle first, it makes it easier to cut the rest of the rolls).

Form the rolls into buns and put them on a baking sheet lined with a parchment paper. Always dust your hands with he flour before shaping the rolls into buns Because the dough is somehow sticky.

Brush the buns with the egg yolk (that you previously kept aside) mixed with a dash of milk.

Gently arrange some chocolate chips on the outside of the buns, so that you will have good looking buns in the end.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until nicely golden brown and enjoy!

Can I substitute cocoa powder for some of the flour and make these double chocolate?

That's a great question, Liza. Unfortunately I haven't tried it, so I can't really give you a concrete answer. But you know what they say, Nothing ventured nothing gained. :)

The recipe sounds doable Ester, even for a novice like me. Thank you. I like the step-by-step instructions.
