Raisin Buns WITHOUT Yeast

Raisin Buns WITHOUT Yeast

Easy and delicious raisin buns made with baking powder instead of yeast in no time. No “waiting time” just make the dough, shape it into buns and bake.

These raisin buns are delicious, fluffy, so easy and only take 35 minutes to make including preparation time. Easy enough to be made by kids or beginner bakers too.

All you have to do is combine all the ingredients (except the raisins) to make the dough, knead the dough for a minute, fold in rehydrated raisins, shape and bake. Enjoy the buns for breakfast, afternoon tea /coffee or as a travel snack.

What you’ll need to make quick raisin buns without yeast

  • 300 g (10.6 oz/ 2 ½ cups) plain flour (all purpose flour) plus extra for dusting
  • 1 medium egg
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 150 g (5.3 oz) Greek yogurt
  • 65 g (2.3 oz/ 1/3 cup ) sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla sugar/ ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract (just use ½ tablespoon more sugar if you’re using vanilla extract)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) raisins

How to make quick and easy raisin buns

Begin by preheating the oven to 180°C (392 °F) with both up and low heat. Next, put raisins into a bowl and pour over boiling water to make them soft. (Make sure that all the raisins are under water, while making the dough).

Separate the egg, keep the egg yolk aside for later. In a bowl combine yogurt, baking powder, flour, milk, oil, sugar, a pinch of salt and the egg white and knead for about one minute (you don’t want to over knead the dough!).

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for another minute.

Next drain the raisins and knead in the raisins (leave some to decorate the buns if you like) and shape the dough into a long baguette form.

Cut the baguette roll into approximately 10 equal rolls. (Cut the roll in the middle first, it makes it easier to cut the rest of the rolls).

Form the rolls into buns and put them on a baking sheet lined with a parchment paper.

  • Always dust your hands with the flour before shaping the rolls into buns.

Brush the buns with the egg yolk (that you previously kept aside) mixed with a dash of milk. Gently arrange some raisins on the outside of the buns, if you like.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until nicely golden brown and enjoy.
