Sweet Chili Edamame

This quick and easy Sweet Chili Edamame is perfect as an appetizer, snack, or side dish. Edamame pods are pan-fried in garlic, sweet chili sauce, then topped with toasted sesame seeds for a bit of an extra crunch.

Edamame are green soybeans that are often enjoyed as an appetizer in Japanese sushi bars and restaurants. Boiled or steamed whole edamame pods are typically served with just a light sprinkle of sea salt on the top.

Try this quick and easy Sweet Chili Edamame recipe if you would like to spice up this healthy appetizer. The edamame pods are boiled, then pan-fried with a bit of garlic and sweet chili sauce, then topped with toasted sesame seeds for a bit of an extra crunch. They are perfect as an appetizer, snack or side dish. 

The edamame pods are not meant to be eaten. Place the pod in your mouth, then use your teeth to gently pop the edamame beans out of the pod. Even though the pod is discarded, you’ll still get to enjoy the flavor of the sweet chili sauce and the crunchy texture of the sesame seeds with the edamame bean.

How to Make Sweet Chili Edamame

Boil 4 cups of water in a medium-sized pot over medium-high heat. Add 3 tablespoons of salt to the water. 

As soon as the water has reached a rolling boil, add 1/2 a pound of frozen edamame pods to the pot.

Boil the edamame for 4 minutes.

When the edamame is cooked, drain them using a colander, then rinse with cold tap water. This prevents them from getting overcooked since we’ll be pan-frying them as well.

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.

Add the edamame to the pan.

Stir the edamame for about a minute, then add 2 cloves of garlic (minced) to the pan. Stir-fry till aromatic (about 30 seconds).

Next, add 2 tablespoons of sweet chili sauce (storebought or homemade) to the edamame.

Finally, add 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds to the edamame.

Give the edamame a good stir to combine all the ingredients. 

Allow the edamame to cool slightly before serving.

  • Add the salt to the water, then bring the salted water to a boil in a medium-sized pot over medium-high heat.
  • Add the frozen edamame pods to the boiling water. Boil for 4 minutes.
  • Drain the edamame, then rinse with cold water.
  • Heat cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the edamame to the pan; stir-fry for about 1 minute.
  • Add the garlic, then stir-fry till aromatic (about 30 seconds).
  • Pour the chili sauce over the edamame, followed by the toasted sesame seeds. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  • Allow the edamame to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
