Quick And Easy Instant Pot Bolognese Recipe
Another bistro classic recipe is Bolognese sauce. I love to make it on a Sunday and let it simmer on the stove or in the oven for 3 hours.
The sauce completely falls apart and all the flavors come together in this rich thick sauce.
You do not need lots of ingredients you do not even need tomatoes to make Bolognese sauce.
But what if you grave this great sauce on a Tuesday and do not have the time to make it? You take out your Instant Pot and you have it on the table in less than 20 minutes.
Instant Pot Bolognese Ingredients
To make this recipe you need the following ingredients. Put them on your grocery shopping list and have them ready when you start:
- Ground beef
- Pancetta
- Onion
- Carrot (fresh or frozen)
- Tomato paste
- Water
- Salt and pepper
- Celery (optional)
How To Make Instant Pot Bolognese
To make this Instant Pot Bolognese version you start with chopping the onion, celery, carrot, and pancetta.
Connect your Instant Pot and select the Sauté button. First, add your ground beef and use a wooden spoon to break the meat apart and brown.
Then add the pancetta and let the fat render. Then you can add the onion, carrot, and celery.
Stir continuously until the onion is soft and translucent. This takes about 3 minutes.
Then add the tomato paste before adding water and stirring it to combine the sauce.
Season with salt and pepper.
Cancel the Sauté option and close the lid. Select Pressure Cook or Manual and cook the sauce for 8 minutes.
As the pot is already hot it takes no more than a couple of minutes to come to pressure.
When cooking time is done you can let the Instant Pot natural release for 5 to 10 minutes.
Open the Instant Pot, stir and serve.
If you want to serve with tagliatelle, you can cook the pasta when your Bolognese is cooking in the Instant Pot.
Can You Make Bolognese Ahead?
Yes! You can make this Instant Pot Bolognese or any Bolognese sauce recipe ahead of time.
In fact, by preparing this sauce a day in advance of serving the flavors will intensify.
So, if you have the chance make your ragu sauce in advance and serve it one or two days later.
How To Store Bolognese Ragu
You can store your sauce in several ways. In all cases when you are storing your sauce let it cool completely first.
- Refrigerate – you can store your pasta sauce in the fridge. Either store it in a Ziploc bag or an airtight food container. Be aware that due to the tomato paste it can be difficult to get the red sauce out of your food container. Let it soak for a couple of hours in soap to rinse the tomato sauce away. You can store the sauce for up to 3 days in the fridge
- Freezer – If you want to store your sauce longer, you have leftovers, or made a double batch then freezing is your best option. Put your sauce in your freezer-friendly bag or a leak-free food container. You can store it for up to 3 months
How To Reheat Bolognese sauce
It is really easy to reheat your sauce. Select the option that fits you best:
- Instant Pot – If you’ve frozen the sauce just put it in the Instant Pot. Add 1/4 cup of water and close the lid. Select Pressure Cook or Manual and cook for 8 minutes. When you thawed the sauce follow the instructions but cook for 3 minutes and serve
- Dutch oven – you can also reheat this sauce in a Dutch oven. Preheat the pan to medium and add your sauce let it come to heat slowly and add water if the sauce is too thick. Heat until warm. This can take up to 10-15 minutes
- Oven – when you reheat your Bolognese in the oven put it in a cast-iron or enameled pan so the sauce can get warm. In the oven, it can take longer to heat. Preheat your oven to 400℉. Put the meat in the pan and add 1/3 cup of water. Heat for at least 15 minutes. Stir and check if the sauce is warm
- Microwave – you can warm this sauce in the microwave. Put it in a microwave resistant container and warm for 2 minutes. Check to see if the sauce is warm and extend with 1 minute until warm
