Baking A Small Apple Pie In An Air Fryer
Apple pie is a great bistro recipe and just got a whole lot better because if you want apple pie but a small one, this recipe is for you.
If you own a small Air Fryer like I do, you can still make a 7.5-inch apple pie.
The trick is to replace the Air Fryer basket with the Air Fryer grill pan. The grill pan doesn’t have high edges like the basket so you can fit a 7,8-inch apple pie form.
Best Apples For Apple Pie
So, you want to bake an apple pie but what apple should you choose? In general, the answer is a sweet/sour apple is best and are red-colored apples.
So, when you go and buy apples to use for your pie choose one of these apples:
- Granny Smith
- Golden Delicious
- Jonagold
- Honey crisp
- Jonathan apples
- Braeburn
- Rome apples
Air Fryer Apple Pie Ingredients
To make this apple pie put the following ingredients on your grocery shopping list and have them ready when you start:
- Self-rising flour
- Butter or margarine
- Apples
- Raisins
- Fine sugar
- Small Egg
- Lemon juice
- Cinnamon
- Granulated sugar
- Pinch of Salt
How To Make Air Fryer Apple Pie
- To make the apple pie start with the raisins. Put the raisins in warm water and set aside for 10 minutes.
- Cut the butter into small pieces. Beat the egg in a small bowl. Add ⅓ of the egg to the butter in a large bowl.
- Add the vanilla extract, pinch of salt, sugar, and flour to the large bowl.
- Knead the ingredients by hand into a consistent dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator.
- Take another big bowl, peel the apples, and cut into thin slices. Stir the lemon, sugar, and cinnamon through the sliced apples.
- Dry the raisins in kitchen towels and also add to the apple filling.
- Take the dough out of the fridge. Cut ⅔ of the dough, and flour a kitchen board to roll out the dough.
- Coat the springform with cooking spray or butter and press the dough into the baking form.
- Put the apple mixture on top of the dough. Brush the visible crust and apples with the remaining beaten eggs.
- Preheat the Air Fryer for 5 minutes to 320℉/160℃. If you have a small springform of less than 7.8-inch bake for 35 minutes else bake for 45-50 minutes.
- Check halfway through the baking time. If the apple pie browns tightly wrap the baking form with aluminium foil.
How To Get A Levelled Apple Pie
When you bake an apple pie the apples turn soft and shrink inside the apple pie. As a result, the middle of an apple pie dips a little because the apples shrink.
To prevent the pile of apples from shrinking too much you can stack the apples into a mount before you put the apple pie in the Air Fryer.
You will get a leveled apple pie after baking.
Should I Use Egg Wash On My Apple Pie?
If you want a golden-brown apple pie then use egg wash. You can make an egg wash by beating an egg and adding 1 tablespoon of water.
If you want a dark crust, you can substitute water in the egg wash for cream or milk.
How To Store Air Fryer Apple Pie
There are various ways to store your apple pie:
- Room temperature – you can store a baked apple pie at room temperature for up to 2 days. Just leave your apple pie in the springform and cover it with foil or plastic wrap
- Refrigerator – you can also keep apple pie in the refrigerator for up to 4 or 5 days. Cool completely before storing and wrap the springform with foil or plastic wrap
- Freezer – my favorite way to store apple pie is in the freezer. Cut your apple pie into 6 or 8 pieces and wrap every piece individually with foil or plastic wrap. Store for up to 3 months
How To Reheat Apple Pie
If you want to reheat your apple pie you have several options. If you have frozen apple pie let it thaw first
- Air Fryer – an easy way to reheat a piece of apple pie is in the Air Fryer. Turn to temperature to 320℉/160℃ for 3 minutes. Wrap the apple pie in aluminum foil and heat for 5 to 7 minutes
- Oven – you do the same with the oven. Heat your oven to 320℉/160℃ and add your apple pie wrapped in foil for 5 minutes or until heated through
- Microwave – heat your apple pie in 30-second bursts and check if the apple pie is warm after every burst
Every Air Fryer is different which can result in different cooking times or temperatures. I have a Philips Viva Collection Air Fryer that is small and fits meals for 2 to 3 persons.
Use the temperatures and cooking times as starting points and adjust for your own Air Fryer.
