Gluten Free Apple Crisp with Oatmeal
This recipe is quintessentially fall and always brings me back to my grandmother’s kitchen. As much as I love pumpkin (and I’ve got tons of pumpkin recipes to prove it!), apple and cinnamon are strong contenders for my favorite fall flavor combination.
This easy homemade crisp with a simple and delicious oat topping is one of the best lazy desserts ever. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the amazing fall apple harvest!
I know this is technically a dessert, I do. Even though this is just the best quick and easy fall dessert, I’ve been known to enjoy the leftovers with a cup of coffee for breakfast, too!
I’ve partnered up with Klarbrunn to bring you this perfect autumn recipe. I love having a serving of this apple crisp warm with a scoop of ice cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, and a cold can of Klarbrunn Pomelo Grapefruit Sparkling Water. It’s such a great combination! Apple Crisp Topping
If you’re anything like me, the crisp is all about the topping for you! I love a thick buttery topping with lots of oats and flavor. That’s why I included a healthy amount of it in this recipe. It’s the best part!
Best Apples for Apple Crisp
I prefer golden delicious apples in this recipe, but gala and granny smith would also work well.
You can either peel the apples or leave the peel on, it’s up to you, but I do prefer the texture without the peel. Just be sure to wash the apples really well to remove all the wax if you opt to leave the peel on.
Apple Crisp vs Apple Crumble
Apple crisp is made with fruit and a light topping of butter, sugar, flour, oats, and no nuts. On the other hand, apple crumble is made with fruit and a dense streusel topping of butter, sugar, flour, and occasionally nuts.
What to Bake This In
I typically bake this in an 8 x 8 pan, but it also works in a 13 x 9 pan. You can also use a cast iron skillet.
How Long to Bake It
It depends on your oven and what you bake it in, but 40 – 50 minutes at 350 F is normally perfect. It’s ready when the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.

Calories in Apple Crisp
According to Cronometer, one serving of this apple crisp has approximately 340 calories.
Dairy Free and Vegan Apple Crisp
To make this recipe either dairy free, vegan, or plant based, the only ingredient you need to substitute is the butter.
The butter can either be replaced with cold coconut oil or cold vegan butter (I’ve had the best luck with the Vegan Buttery Sticks by Earth Balance).
Apple Crisp Without Sugar
If you want to make this recipe without granulated sugar, you can substitute it with either coconut sugar or maple syrup.

Gluten Free Apple Crisp
Old fashioned gluten free apple crisp with lots of delicious crumble topping is the best easy dessert! Just like grandma's, and it's perfect with ice cream!
Ingredients
Filling:
- 6 golden delicious apples (peeled, cored, and cut into chunks)
- 3 Tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Crumble Topping:
- 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 3/4 cup old fashioned oats (certified gluten free)
- 3/4 cup gluten free flour blend
- Pinch fine sea salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into 1/4” squares)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F (176 C). Butter an 8 x 8 baking dish (13 x 9 also works if you like a thinner layer), and set aside.
- To a large mixing bowl, add the filling ingredients (apple, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and lemon juice). Mix to combine. Pour into the baking dish to make an even layer.
- To a medium mixing bowl, add the brown sugar, oats, flour, salt, cinnamon, and ginger. Stir to combine. Add the butter cubes and use a pastry cutter to cut in until the butter is about the size of peas. Alternatively, you can use a fork or make a snapping motion with your fingers to break the butter up.
- Pour the crumble topping over the apple filling and gently press into place.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of ice cream and a caramel drizzle!
Notes
I used Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Baking Flour and it worked very well in this recipe. In my experience, it acts like it has a higher starch content than other gluten free flour blends, so it held the crumble topping together perfectly.
This recipe can easily be made ahead and then baked just before serving.
Apple crisp doubles beautifully if you need to serve a crowd!
If you don’t need this recipe to be gluten free, you can substitute the gluten free flour blend with the same amount of all-purpose flour.
