Halloween Apples

Healthy-ish and still completely festive and delicious sums these Halloween apples up perfectly.

You still get the chocolate coating and fun decorations for celebrating, but then there’s the apple which just feels a little bit better than handfuls of chocolate, you know?

I had so much fun playing with the different decorations and flavor combinations for these apples and I ended up with two favorites.

For flavor, I think the winner was the apple rolled in mini Reese’s Pieces.

For easy but spooky decorations, a random mish mash of different sized candy eyes gave the Halloween vibe with minimal effort.

Wax on Apples

Washing off the wax from the apples is one of the most important steps for this recipe. If you don’t, it makes it so much harder for the chocolate to stick to the apple.

To wash the wax off, scrub them in a tub filled with a mixture of vinegar and water. Scrub them to remove the wax and then rinse them in clean water.

Best Apples for Candy Apples

Granny Smith apples are the best choice for caramel apples, because their tartness balances out the sweetness of the caramel perfectly.

Since the chocolate coating on these Halloween apples isn’t as sweet as the caramel is, I prefer to use Red Delicious apples. The deep red color is perfect for Halloween, too!

How to Make Chocolate Coated Apples for Halloween

Dip each apple into the chocolate, rolling it around to coat it evenly. Place the apples to cool on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

If you’re going to coat the apple in a candy coating, lay the coating out on a large plate and roll the apple across it (much easier than trying to coat the apple from a bowl of toppings).

It also helps to let the chocolate coating set on the apple for about 15 seconds before adding any candy (you want it to not be too drippy when you add candy, but you don’t want it to be so set that the candy won’t bind to it).

Which Chocolate to Use

You can either use chocolate bars or candy melts. Chocolate bars will definitely be more expensive, but the chocolate will both be easier to work with and the taste is noticeably better.

A quick note: If you want to dip the apples in white chocolate, I really recommend using white chocolate bars and not white chocolate candy melts. The white chocolate version of candy melts are notoriously hard to work with. I was hoping to get away with it with this recipe, and while it did work, it was challenging.

How to Make this Recipe Vegan

The only thing you need to do to make this recipe dairy-free, plant based, or vegan is to use vegan chocolate and candy for the coating.

Ingredients

  • 10 small red apples (room temperature)
  • 2 cups roughly chopped white chocolate
  • 10 apple sticks
  • Festive edible decorations of choice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples in a vinegar and water mixture to remove the wax coating from the apples (this helps the chocolate coating stick to the apples).
  2. Twist the apple sticks firmly into the apples. You want the sticks to be deep enough that the apples will easily stay firmly on them.
  3. Melt the chocolate using the double boiler method. Choose a small pot and a medium to large heatproof glass bowl that fit well together. The bowl should rest about 3” above the bottom of the pot when nested on top of it. Fill the pot with 2” of water (leaving 1” of space between the water and the bowl). Bring the pot of water to a simmer without the bowl on top. Turn the heat off and place the bowl on top. Add the chocolate in and use a silicone spatula to stir constantly until the chocolate has melted and has the consistency of thick drippy honey.
  4. Dip each apple into the chocolate, rolling it around to coat it evenly. Place the apples on a parchment paper lined baking sheet to cool. If you’re going to coat the apple in a decorative candy coating, lay the coating out on a large plate and roll the apple across it (this is much easier than trying to coat the apple from a bowl of toppings). It also helps to let the chocolate coating set on the apple for about 15 seconds before adding any candy (you want it to not be too drippy when you add candy, but you don’t want it to be so set that the candy won’t bind to it).

Notes

I wouldn’t recommend using a wood spoon for stirring the melting chocolate because the chocolate will stick to the spoon.

2 cups of roughly chopped chocolate will make enough coating for 10 small apples, but if you want to be able to easily dunk or twirl the apples in the coating, I’d recommend melting 4 cups. There will be leftover melted chocolate, but the decorating process will definitely be easier.

If you don't opt for white chocolate, candy melts are a more affordable option and is what I probably use if I was opting for a milk chocolate coating. White chocolate candy melts are notoriously challenging to work with, so even though you could use them for this recipe, it will turn out better with real white chocolate bars.
