Halloween Rice Krispie Treats

If decorating desserts isn’t your forte, but you want to celebrate Halloween with some seriously fun desserts, these super easy Halloween Rice Krispie Treats are the perfect treats for you!

They’re incredibly easy because the cookie cutters and candy eyes pretty much do all the work in making a cute festive dessert for you. You can use a little colored frosting in for added effect, too!

I love Rice Krispie Treats so much. Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats are my all-time favorite, but these Christmas Rice Krispie Treats and Easter Rice Krispie Nests are also pretty great and so festive!

I’ve partnered up with Klarbrunn to bring you this festive Halloween recipe. I love pairing these rice krispie treats with an ice cold can of Klarbrunn’s Citrus Blend Sparkling Water. It’s the perfect way to lighten up these fun treats! You can find out where to buy Klarbrunn’s sparkling water here.

How to Decorate Halloween Rice Krispie Treats

Start with orange, white, and black icing. Smear the appropriate colored icing on each treat. Next, add in candy eyes to complete the look.

For one of the simplest designs, you can add lots of candy eyeballs in varying sizes to create a monster look.

Can You Freeze Rice Krispies Treats?

Yes! Freeze these before decorating them though.

To freeze rice krispie treats, separate the cut pieces with parchment paper and store them in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 6 weeks. Let the treats come to room temperature for 15 minutes before decorating or eating.

Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats

This isn’t called for in the recipe, but if you’re feeling next level, can I recommend browning your butter? It adds an element of toffee and caramel flavors, which I really love.

It also gives a little more depth of flavor, which is perfect for elevating this simple dessert if you’re serving it to foodies (but I’d stick with regular melted butter if you’re making these for kids).

Pumpkin Rice Krispies

If you really want to pump up the fall flavor in these treats, I’d recommend adding two teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Additional Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 40 marshmallows (10 ounces)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • Candy eyes (optional, for decorating)
  • Frosting (optional, for decorating)

Instructions

  1. Spray a 13 x 9 nonstick baking sheet with oil and set to the side.
  2. In a large nonstick skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and use a silicone spatula to stir the marshmallows into the butter. Continue stirring until the marshmallows have melted. Remove from the heat.
  3. Add the cereal in and gently fold the cereal into the marshmallow mixture. Once fully mixed, place in the baking sheet. Using the back of a spatula that’s been sprayed with oil, press into place. You want the treats to only be about ½” thick so that the cookie cutters can cut through them.
  4. Allow the treats to cool for about 20 minutes. You want them to be set enough that you can quickly flip the tray over onto parchment paper without them breaking, but you also want them to be a little bit warm and flexible so that the cookie cutters can cut through the treats easily.
  5. Spray the cookie cutters with oil and cut out the individual treats. It’s easiest if you press down firmly on the whole cookie cutter and then pull away the excess from around the cookie cutter. Then you can lift the cookie cutter up with the treat inside and gently push the treat out with your fingers.
  6. Let the cut out treats finish cooling, then top with colored icing and candy eyes for a decorated and spooky Halloween look.

Notes

Only use a silicone spatula for stirring the marshmallows and butter. It’s very sticky and will heavily stick to wood or metal spatulas.

The number of servings will vary drastically depending on the size of cookie cutter you use and how close together you’re able to cut out the individual treats. I used large cookie cutters, and with more planning could have gotten more treats out of my sheet of rice krispie treats. I was able to get 14 large cut out Halloween rice krispie treats from this recipe.

I’d recommend using high quality metal cookie cutters for this recipe. I think it would have been much more challenging to make these if I’d been using dull plastic cookie cutters.
