I love all the playful creations that come about for Halloween.  There are just so many fun themes to work with for creating Halloween treats - from pumpkins, to ghosts, to monsters, and Dracula, Frankenstein, and mummies, to spiders, and black cats, and witches galore.

And of course, there's always lots of Halloween bloody gore. -- Which serves as the inspiration for this tasty Bloody Sunrise cocktail.

Add some easy blood drips to martini glass rims, and you've got one fun cocktail for sipping on Halloween night.

A riff on the classic Tequila Sunrise, a Bloody Sunrise takes the signature sunrise layered effect and turns it into a festively blood-drip-adorned treat that's just perfect for Halloween night sipping.

But it you're not a fan of tequila? -- No problem.  You can mix up a sweeter pineapple and coconut based Malibu Sunrise version instead.

But whether you keep it classic tequila or sweeten it up Malibu style, a Bloody Sunrise is sure one fun and easy way to add some festive gore to your Halloween festivities.

Halloween Bloody Sunrise Cocktail Ingredients:

Five simple ingredients is all it takes to whip up a Bloody Sunrise.  For these fun and gory cocktails, you'll need:

  • Corn syrup & red food coloring - A simple mixture of corn syrup and red food coloring is used to create the cocktail's blood drip embellishments.

  • Orange Juice - Orange juice creates the orange layer in this cocktail's signature sunrise effect.

  • Grenadine - A splash of grenadine creates the sunrise red layer of the drink.  Grenadine is a sweet bright red syrup made from pomegranates.  Find it in a small bottle in the drink mixers section at the grocery store, or order grenadine online from Amazon.

  • Tequila - The liquor base of the drink.

If you prefer a sweeter version, use Malibu rum instead of tequila.

How to Make Bloody Sunrise Halloween Cocktails:

Whipping up some Bloody Sunrise Halloween cocktails is really pretty easy.

The first step is to prepare the "blood" mixture for the blood-drip martini glass rims.

The "blood" is a simple mixture of corn syrup and red food coloring.  Place about a tablespoon of corn syrup in a wide, shallow bowl or rimmed plate.  I used a rimmed salad plate.  You just need something that's got a little depth to it so the mixture doesn't run out all over the place, and that's wide enough to fit a martini glass being dipped in.

Stir the corn syrup mixture together until its a uniform red color.

Once mixed together, allow the blood mixture to stand at room temperature for 1 hour to thicken up a bit.

This step of allowing the corn syrup mixture to stand at room temperature for an hour to thicken is important. If you try to create the bloody drips on your glasses before the mixture has thickened up, the drips run way too much and can get pretty messy.

Once the corn syrup blood mixture has sat for an hour, dip the rim of a martini glass in the mixture.

Then set the glass upright to let blood drips form.

Repeat with more glasses if you're making more than one cocktail.  There's enough corn syrup blood to dip and prepare several glasses.

Be careful when dipping the glass rims to not get too thick a corn syrup coating on the rim. A thick coating can create unwieldy bloody drips that get long and messy, like in the photo below.

You don't need a whole lot of the corn syrup mixture to get a nice embellishment of blood drips!

Combine the drink's orange juice and tequila, and pour it into the prepared glasses.

Then, slowly pour the grenadine in down the side of the glass.

The grenadine sinks to the bottom of the drink, creating the striking red hue at the bottom.  The orange juice mixture creates the yellow band at the top, while a little intermingling of everything together creates a beautiful variegated effect throughout the middle.

With it all together you've got one beautiful sunrise-effect Halloween cocktail to enjoy, complete with blood drips adorning the sides!

Ingredients

For Blood-Drip Rim:
For Each Cocktail:
  • 2 1/2 oz. orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 1 oz. grenadine

Instructions

To Prepare Blood-Drip Rim:
  1. Mix together corn syrup and red food coloring in a wide, shallow bowl or rimmed plate. Let stand at room temperature for 1 hour to thicken up a bit.
  2. Dip the rim of a martini glass in corn syrup mixture. Set glass upright to let drips form.
  3. Repeat with additional glasses, if making more than one cocktail.
To Prepare Cocktail(s):
  1. Combine orange juice and tequila. Pour into prepared glass.
  2. Slowly pour grenadine down the side of the glass. Do not stir.
  3. Serve immediately.
TRACEY'S NOTES:
  1. Letting the corn syrup mixture stand at room temperature for an hour to let it thicken is important. If you try to create the bloody drips before the mixture has thickened up a bit, the drips run way too much.
  2. Be careful when dipping the glass rims in the corn syrup mixture to not get too thick a coating on the rim. A thick coating can create unwieldy bloody drips that get long and messy.
  3. The corn syrup mixture makes enough for dipping several glasses.
  4. Don't stir after you've added the grenadine -- it's meant to settle on the bottom of the glass to create the layered signature "sunrise" effect.
  5. For a sweeter version, turn this into a  Malibu Sunrise! For each cocktail, use: 2 ounces pineapple juice, 1/2 ounce orange juice, 1 1/2 ounce Malibu coconut rum, and 1 ounce grenadine.
