This soothing ginger and cinnamon tea is flavoured with dried spices and sweetened with natural honey. It is made by brewing fresh ginger, cinnamon and one whole clove over a stovetop for 30 minutes. After the flavours and spices have infused with the tea, honey is added to give it body and a touch of sweetness. This is a healthy, warming tea that can be enjoyed hot or cold any time of the day.

Some Health Benefits of Ginger

Disclaimer – the information below is not intended to be medical advice. It is based on my own personal experience, as well as some Internet research. I’m not a medical professional and you should always consult your doctor for medical advice.

The primary ingredient in ginger tea is, of course, ginger, which has a number of health benefits:

Breastfeeding – ginger helps stimulate breastmilk production, which is the reason why I started drinking ginger tea in the first place.

Easing nausea – ginger is effective at relieving nausea, including morning sickness. I definitely found this to be the case when I was pregnant, with both gingernut biscuits and ginger ale helping me through my first trimester. Ginger is generally considered safe during pregnancy.

Improving digestion – there is some evidence to show ginger is good for your digestion. The enzymes in ginger can help break up and expel digestive gasses, and ginger can help improve movement through the digestive tract, providing constipation relief. Ginger tea is also the best way to consume ginger when treating acid reflux.

Pain relief – ginger has anti-inflammatory properties which can relieve headaches, muscle soreness and menstrual cramps. I find ginger tea is very soothing when I have a sore throat.

Skin – ginger is beneficial for your skin. It can help reduce inflammation and cellulite, fight acne and prevent free radical damage.

Whether you are drinking ginger tea for its healing properties, or you just like the taste, it is sure to both soothe and invigorate you.

How to Make Ginger and Cinnamon Tea

Start by bringing two litres of water to the boil in a medium saucepan. While the water is coming to the boil, slice 80 gm of ginger. There’s no need to peel the ginger, but do give it a rinse and a scrub to remove any visible dirt. Add the ginger, one cinnamon stick and one whole clove to the water. The water does not need to be boiling before adding these ingredients. Once the water is boiling reduce the heat then simmer for 30 minutes.

Strain the tea then return to the saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of honey and stir until dissolved. At this point the tea is ready to drink. You can also transfer it to a jug or plastic container and store in the refrigerator for later. You can serve this tea hot or cold.

Tailoring Your Tea

This recipe produces a tea with quite a strong “spicy” ginger flavour, followed by cinnamon and then with a lingering sweetness from the honey. I would say the ginger definitely packs a punch, while also satisfying my sweet tooth without being overly sweet.

Here’s how you can tailor your tea:

  • Cinnamon and cloves – these can be omitted if you don’t have them on hand. They add extra flavour, but they are not the dominant ingredients.
  • Honey substitute – the honey can be substituted for maple syrup. This is a good vegan option.
  • Lowering calories – if you are after something with lower calories then leave out the honey.
  • Adjusting the sweetness – add more honey to increase the sweetness, or more water to dilute.
  • Adjusting the intensity of the ginger – the ginger flavour will intensify the longer and harder the water boils, so cook for more/less time as required. If you’ve gone too far, add more water to dilute.
  • Add a slice of lemon – you can add a slice of lemon to your cup/glass for some added acidity.
