With a great bite, this wrap is for everybody. Yes, a veggie wrap filled with hummus is the star ingredient to give your wrap a nice nutty flavor. So, are you ready to learn how to make a hummus veggie wrap? Let’s get started!
What You Need For This Recipe
So, what do you need to make this hummus veggie wrap? Put the following ingredients on your grocery shopping list and have them ready when you start:
- Flour tortillas – this recipe is made with medium-sized flour tortillas
- Hummus – you can use store-bought or make homemade hummus which is very easy to make yourself
- Mushrooms – dice the mushrooms
- Red onion – finely chop the onion
- White onion – use regular or sweet white onions
- Chickpeas – canned or dried chickpeas. If you want to use dried chickpeas soak them in water overnight
- Bell pepper – I prefer to use sweet red bell peppers cut into thin strips
- Sun-dried tomatoes – to garnish the wrap use sun-dried tomatoes
- Avocado – cut the avocado into thin slices
- Arugula – for color and a nutty flavor garnish with arugula
- Black pepper – season to taste
- Olive oil – to cook the mushroom, onions, and bell pepper you need olive oil
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make A Hummus Veggie Wrap
- To make a veggie wrap is all about slicing and assembly. Besides the ingredients, you see in the recipe you can add any vegetable you like which you can find several down below.
- Start with thinly slicing the onions. You can slice with a knife or use a mandolin slicer. A mandolin slicer can get you super-thin slices. Also thinly slice your avocado, bell peppers, and mushrooms.
- Preheat your cast-iron skillet to medium-hot and add olive oil. Use a well-seasoned skillet like this cast-iron skillet as it makes life so much easier and your tortillas will not stick to the pan.
- Then add the sliced bell pepper and mushrooms.
- Sauté for a couple of minutes until the bell pepper is soft and the mushrooms are browned. Put the mix in a bowl and set it aside.
- Wipe the skillet clean and return it to the stove. Then take a flour tortilla. You do not need any baking product just put your tortilla in the skillet, let it warm, and char it a little until you see black spots. Keep them warm in a tortilla warmer or a clean kitchen towel.
- Now it is time to stack your hummus veggie wrap. Start with a big serving of hummus and spread it on the tortilla. Add two tablespoons of the mushroom bell pepper mixture on top.
- Then divide slices of onion on top of the hummus as well. Now add some sun-dried tomatoes and avocado to the tortilla before you finish with some sprigs of arugula.
- Repeat for the remaining tortillas and your hummus veggie wraps are ready to serve.
Tasty Wrap Recipe
Hummus is so easy to make, especially with a food processor to turn it into a mousse-type consistency. You can of course use store-bought hummus which is fine but hummus is a great spread to make yourself.
As chickpeas have a little skin on them, I always remove them. It might seem like a tedious task, which it is but your hummus will taste so much better.
A simple trick to skin your chickpeas is to take three bowls:
- One bowl – to hold all the unskinned chickpeas either from a can or you can soak dried chickpeas overnight
- Second bowl – to put all the deskinned chickpeas in
- The third bowl – to collect all the chickpea skin
Now all the hard work is done and you can start making your lunch wrap as this recipe is also great to put in your lunchbox. You can make them with store-bought tortillas but you can easily use homemade flour tortillas.
I like to make a whole stack of tortillas and store them in the freezer. That way I always have so when I need it. They taste so much better than anything you can buy in the store.
Can You Make Hummus Wraps Ahead?
Yes, you can make these hummus wraps ahead of time. Just add the avocado and arugula before serving. Else the avocado will turn brown and the arugula will wilt.
Store the wraps in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for one day.
How To Change Up Your Veggie Wrap
This recipe is vegan but you can easily add more protein by adding shredded chicken or chicken marinate, steak or carnitas will all work fine.
If you want to change the flavor you can also make this pepper hummus or choose any of the flavor tortillas like:
