Strawberry Danish Recipe

For those who’ve been around Sugar, Spice and Glitter for awhile, you know that my daughter and I have completely opposite tastes in dessert.

I just want all of the chocolate, while she rarely wants dessert (meats over sweets for her). If she does get a dessert craving, it tends to be for fruit-based desserts, like strawberry tarts, raspberry-filled donuts, or all things pumpkin spice (yuck on that last one).

She’s recently discovered cream cheese danishes, so I suggested we try making our own! She wanted raspberry, but I convinced her to make strawberry cream cheese danishes. These cream cheese danishes can be made with any fruit – lemon, raspberry, mango, etc.

These crescent hearts can be made even easier if you’d rather make strawberry cream cheese turnovers, cut the crescent dough into squares, or make a braided crescent roll to just cut and serve. However, the heart shape was really easy for my 6 year old to make and was super cute to serve for brunch.

Recipe Tips for These Strawberry Cream Cheese Danishes

Can I use puff pastry instead of crescent dough? Yes, puff pastry would be even tastier with all those flaky layers! Just thaw completely (about 20 minutes) before proceeding with the recipe. Frozen puff pastry can be found in most grocery stores, often alongside frozen pie crusts.

Can I make my own crescent dough for this recipe? Of course! This is a bit more work, but if you’d like to avoid using pre-made crescent dough (and the ingredients that come along with that) you can check out this recipe to make your own crescent dough.

Can these danishes be frozen? Like most pastries, these will suffer a quality loss with freezing, and the cream cheese mixture can become gritty with freezing. You can individually wrap and freeze for up to 2 months, but I personally recommend enjoying them freshly made. They are simple enough that there’s no reason to need to make extra to freeze.

How to Make Strawberry Cheese Danishes

Preheat oven to 375F.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Unroll your crescent roll tube.

Rub some flour on a clean surface (like a cutting board or the counter)

Take two triangles of the crescent dough and place on the prepared surface. Use your fingers to shape the dough into a heart with raised edges, as shown. These edges will serve as a crust to keep the danish filling from spreading out onto the cookie sheet.

Place the heart dough shapes on the prepared cookie sheet.

Combine the cream cheese and sugar or honey. Spread about 1 Tablespoon of the mixture onto each danish.

Combine the jam and chopped up strawberries.

Spoon about 1 1/2 to 2 Tablespoons of the strawberry mixture onto the danishes, overtop of the cream cheese layer.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the dough is golden brown.

Allow to cool slightly before topping with optional drizzle.

To make the drizzle, combine all of the ingredients (powdered icing sugar, milk and vanilla extract). Adjust the consistency with more milk or more icing sugar, as desired.

Drizzle over the cooled danishes.
