Slightly Sweet Soft Bread Rolls
I love bread, the smell of bread in the house is amazing. A good bread roll only needs a bit of butter.
It has to be warm so the butter melts. Once you start eating one you want to eat the whole baking tray.
So put some aside so you have some left for dinner.
These rolls are slightly sweet and soft on the inside. Brush the top with butter for a crusty top.
Homemade Rolls Ingredients
To make this bread roll recipe you need a number of basic ingredients. Most will be available in your pantry.
Have the following ready when you start:
- All-purpose flour
- Butter
- Instant yeast
- Sugar
- Olive oil
- Salt
Items You Need To Make Bread Rolls
Besides the ingredients you can make life really easy when you have the following items available:
- Stand mixer or food processor – to mix your dough you can do it by hand but it is way easier if you use a stand mixer or food processor
- Mixing bowl – to let the dough rise you can put it in a large mixing bowl
- Instant Pot – if you own an Instant Pot or Crockpot Express you can use it to proof your dough
- Cutting board – to shape your rolls use a big cutting boar
- Brush – a silicon brush is great to use to apply the butter on your rolls
- Baking sheet – a baking sheet to bake your bread rolls in the oven
How To Make Homemade Rolls
To make this recipe start with the yeast. If you have active yeast, take a small bowl and add water, yeast, and sugar.
Let it rest for 5-10 minutes you will see the yeast froth and become bubbly. If you have instant yeast this is not really necessary but you can do it anyway.
Then add olive oil, half of the flour and salt to the bowl. Combine the ingredients by hand, stand mixer, or food processor into an elastic dough.
When using a stand mixer or food processor use it at low speed.
Continue mixing until flour is incorporated. Slowly add remaining flour half a cup by cup until the dough clears from the sides of the mixing bowl.
Continue mixing/kneading for 5 more minutes to allow time for the dough to become more elastic.
Lightly grease/oil a large bowl. Shape the dough into a ball and put it in the greased bowl.
Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let rise for about 1 hour or until it doubled in size.
Gently deflate the dough to remove the gases.
Use a scale to measure the dough and divide it into 10 equal size rolls. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and add the dough balls.
Cover the baking sheet again and let the rolls double in size which takes between half-hour to 45 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350℉ and bake the rolls for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
For the soft buttery tops, take the softened butter and spread it on top of the rolls while they are still warm.
How Do I Know My Rolls Are Done?
After baking, you can easily check to see if your rolls are done. When you tap the bottom of the rolls, they should sound hollow.
My Homemade Rolls Are Not Baked Evenly Brown?
If you have an oven like mine that doesn’t brown your baking evenly you can apply this simple trick.
Set your timer to 10 minutes. Oven the oven and turn your baking sheet clockwise 180 degrees.
The rolls that were at the front are now in the back. Close the oven door and bake for the remaining baking time.
Your rolls will be baked more evenly.
How To Store Bread Rolls
You can store your rolls in a number of ways.
- Room temperature – when you are going to eat the bread rolls within a day or two you can store them in a plastic bag at room temperature. You can also store it in a bread box
- Freeze – if you want to store them longer you can wrap them in a ziplock bag and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months
Freeze Your Bread Rolls Dough
You can also use the freezer to preserve your dough. Make the dough ahead of time and bake when you want to eat these bread rolls
Make dough and shape into balls so do not let the dough rise. To prevent the dough balls from freezing together you can freeze the dough ball on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
After 2 hours transfer the dough balls to a ziplock bag and keep them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
When you want to bake ready to bake, place frozen dough balls onto a greased baking sheet.
Thaw the dough balls and cover them with a clean kitchen towel. Let the bread rolls rise for between 3 to 4 hours or when they do have doubled in size.
Bake as instructed in the recipe.
