How to make a banana spinach strawberry smoothie

Ingredient notes/swaps

  • Raw spinach – Use baby spinach because it is milder and sweeter than mature spinach. You can also substitute it with kale – make sure to remove the stem.
  • Strawberries – Both frozen or fresh strawberries will work.
  • Banana –Pick bananas that are firm but ripe. Chopped frozen bananas will work as well.
  • Liquid – Whole milk works great, but you can also use plant-based milk such as oat, almond, or cashew milk. You can also use plain yogurt or Greek yogurt.
  • Sweetener – pitted dates, honey, or maple syrup. Note: If you don’t have a high-performance blender, soak the dates in 1/4 cup of warm milk or water for 15-30 minutes. Dates are known for their natural sweetness, so there is no need to add sugar.
  • Ice cubes (optional) – no need to use them if you are using frozen strawberries or bananas.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups milk or almond milk
  • 1 cup baby spinach
  • 1 banana fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup chopped strawberries
  • 5-6 seedless dates

Instructions

  • Add milk along with baby spinach into the blender.
  • Add the remaining ingredients – banana, strawberries, and date.
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Serve immediately for the best tasting smoothie.

Notes

Variations
  • You can skip the strawberries to make spinach banana smoothie.
  • You can use yogurt too instead of milk.
  • Replace dates with honey or maple syrup.
  • You can throw in a few ice cubes too but I prefer my smoothies as close to room temperature as possible (especially during the winter).
  • If you don’t mind a bit of crunch in your smoothie, serve it with granola.
Tips
  1. Don’t toss those overripe bananas. Peel and chop them and put them in the freezer. Use it in this smoothie without thawing.
  2. Use a high-performance blender like Blendtec or Vitamix for best results.
  3. Use baby spinach because it is milder and sweeter than mature spinach.
  4. I use 1 cup of spinach for two servings. You can always start with one cup and add more greens as you get acclimated to the taste of spinach in your smoothie.
  5. You can prep ahead for this smoothie – add all the ingredients except milk and dates in a glass jar and freeze it. Remove it from the freezer just before making the smoothie, add milk and dates and blend.
