Sprouts Do Not Need To Be Cooked
Brussels sprouts are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, so great to add to any dinner.
The time that we only cook Brussels sprouts is fortunately long gone.
Because nobody is a fan of the whole house smelling of sprouts with soggy sprouts as a result.
Sprouts are like mini cabbages and do not really need to be cooked.
When you finely slice your cabbage and stir-fry you do not even need water. The same applies to sprouts.
Prepare Brussels Sprouts
You can prepare your sprouts in a number of ways. Take a look at the list below:
- Cook – you can still cook them in water but not only for 8-10 minutes
- Steam – cut your sprouts in half and put them in a steamer for 8-10 minutes. This will contain the vitamins and the bite in the sprouts
- Sauté – sauté the sprouts in some butter on medium heat to let them slowly get soft
- Stir-fry – put some oil in a wok and let it go really hot so you can stir fry the sprouts in less than 10 minutes

How To Make Roasted Brussels Sprouts With Bacon And Garlic
Start with cleaning the sprouts. Cut the ends of the sprouts and peel away one or two outer leaves. Cut the sprouts in half and wash them in cold water.
Then finely chop the onion and mince the garlic. Slice all the mushrooms and chop the bacon into small strips.
Now preheat a skillet and first brown the bacon until crispy. You do not need any baking product as bacon has a lot of fat.
If you are using lean bacon, you can add a little knob of butter or oil. Take the bacon out of the skillet and set it aside.
Now heat olive oil and pan-fry the onion and add the garlic. Stir continuously until the onion and garlic are soft and translucent.
Then add the cleaned Brussels sprouts to the skillet and move them around the pan to roast the sprouts.
Now it is time to add the mushrooms. Bake until lightly brown, this will take about 5 minutes.
Then add the cooking cream and return the bacon to the pan.
Stir the cream through the sprouts. Let it simmer for 10 minutes and finally add the grated parmesan cheese.
Take the pan from the furnace when the cream and cheese are bubbling. Your Brussels sprouts with garlic and bacon are done.
Serve directly.
Should I Steam Sprouts Before Roasting?
It is not really necessary as you can see in the recipe above but you can.
Especially if you have big or thick Brussels sprouts you can first steam or cook them to soften the sprouts slightly.
When you cook the sprouts, it only needs to cook for 2 minutes. When you steam them, you can steam them for 5 minutes.
Should You Wash Brussels Sprouts Before Roasting?
Yes, you should clean your sprouts when you start preparing them, even though they are not dirty vegetables.
They may contain some dust that you want to rinse away.
Should Sprouts Be Refrigerated?
I usually do what I see in the store. Sprouts are kept outside of the cooler so that is what I do when I buy them.
Can You Make Roasted Sprouts Ahead
You can make roasted Brussels Sprouts ahead of time. You need to slightly undercook them the day before so they are slightly raw in the center.
Reheat them just before serving in a large skillet and heat them through.
