The Best Lasagna Bolognese Recipe
So, what is better than tagliatelle Bolognese? Any idea? Yes, lasagna Bolognese!
This meat sauce is so versatile that you can easily use it in your lasagna recipe as well.
Even though a lot of similarities between pasta Bolognese and lasagna Bolognese exits there are some differences as well.
Both recipes use the same meat sauce and as you could see with the pasta recipe the longer you keep the meat sauce simmering the better.
Instead of using fettuccini or tagliatelle, you use pasta sheets or lasagna noodles.
Do I Need To Cook Lasagna Noodles?
I do not cook the lasagna noodles before assembling the lasagna Bolognese. There is enough moisture in the meat ragu and béchamel sauce.
The heat when baking lasagna in the oven is enough so there is no need to pre-cook lasagna sheets.
Lasagna Bolognese Ingredients
To make this lasagna recipe you need quite a number of ingredients. So put the following ingredients on your grocery shopping list:
- Ground beef
- Pancetta
- Onion
- Carrot
- Celery
- Tomato puree
- Water
- Salt and pepper
- Parmesan
Bechamel sauce
- Flour
- Butter
- Milk
- Cheese
- Salt
- Pepper
How To Make Lasagna Bolognese al Ragu
To make this recipe you start with preheating a pot, for instance, a Dutch Oven, and add ground beef.
Stir the beef to break up the meat and brown. Finely dice the pancetta before adding it to the brown beef.
Then keep on stirring the beef mixture until all pink of the meat is gone. In the meanwhile, finely dice the onion and carrot.
Finely chop the celery as well and add to the pot.
Stir the vegetables through the beef before adding two tablespoons of tomato puree.
Now stir the tomato puree through the beef. Season the beef with salt and pepper and add water.
Put a lid on the pot and let the meat ragu cook on a low simmer for at least an hour but longer if you have the time.
You can also heat your oven to 400℉ and let the meat cook in the oven. Check every half hour and add water if the Bolognese mix gets too dry.
Prepare The Béchamel Sauce
While the meat is cooking you can make the béchamel sauce. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
Take a whisk and stir in the flour until it turns smooth and into a roux. Let it simmer for 2 minutes.
Poor in the milk in one go and whisk continuously to remove any lumps. You will see the sauce coming together and thicken.
If you like you can add a bit of your favorite shredded cheese. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
Preheat your oven to 350℉. Take a baking dish and spray with cooking spray.
Assemble The Lasagna Bolognese
Start with a couple of spoonfuls of meat sauce and divide it at the bottom of the dish.
Then add about 1/2 cup of béchamel sauce on top of the meat sauce before adding a layer of lasagna noodles.
Repeat this process for 4 or 5 layers until you reach the top. Finish with a layer of lasagna sheets.
Cover it with a layer of meat sauce, béchamel, and sprinkle this final layer with parmesan.
After that bake in the oven for 50 to 60 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Then take the oven dish out of the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes before cut into it.
What Is The Difference Between Lasagna and Lasagna Bolognese?
In regular lasagna, ricotta is often used as an ingredient however in lasagna Bolognese, ricotta is not used.
The layering in lasagna Bolognese exists of a ragu meat sauce, béchamel sauce, and parmesan on top.
Can You Make Lasagna Bolognese Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can! In fact, I would recommend it because it tastes even better when all the flavors of the meat sauce had time to sit.
Now you can either make the meat ragu ahead of time or prepare the whole lasagna Bolognese according to the recipe.
Cook the dish for 45 minutes and then finish baking the lasagna for 15 minutes when you want to serve it.
Lasagna freezes well, so let it cool completely before you put it in an airtight container and in the freezer.
You can keep it for up to 2 months.
Serve Lasagna Bolognese With
You can perfectly serve lasagna Bolognese as the main course. You can serve it with:
