Smoked Mackerel Horseradish Pate

Smoked mackerel reminds me so much of my childhood. I used to go round to my grandparents house on Saturdays after my swimming lesson and my granddad would make lunch. Every week we’d have smoked mackerel with a green, mayonnaise dressed salad. Simple but delicious! This pate recipe is also family inspired. On New Years Eve (the eve of 2020) I was back in the UK and having a low key family evening. My aunt brought round this beautiful mackerel pate starter. I decided I had to make it! A bit of research and a few different variations later I landed on this smoked mackerel pate with horseradish.

Smoked Mackerel Pate For One

This is a perfect recipe to make for one – since each portion uses 1 mackerel fillet. Perfect if you’ve bought a packet to use for another recipe and want to use the rest up. It’s also ridiculously easy – seriously, you can’t go wrong and it takes literally 5 minutes. I’ve made this a few times now (testing different variations) and each time I’ve made two portions and eaten it over two days. You can also freeze it (instructions below). There are also a few different ways you can serve it to add some variety.

How Long Does It Keep In The Fridge?

Providing you are using freshly opened packs of mackerel then it will keep for 3 days. Once I’ve opened a pack of smoked mackerel I would aim to use it within 3 days though, so if you are making it from some that was opened 2 days ago then I would try and eat it within one day.

Can You Freeze Smoked Mackerel Pate?

The good news is that you can freeze this smoked mackerel pate without losing any taste or texture. You may find a little liquid has separated when you defrost – just make sure you give it a good mix to combine everything together well. Make sure the pate is fully defrosted before eating.

How Do You Make Smoked Mackerel Pate?

This could easily be one of the simplest recipes you make this year. Simply roughly flake the mackerel into a blender (just with your fingers is fine) and add in the other ingredients. Wizz into a smooth pate texture. Enjoy! You can pretty much have this ready in the time it takes to toast some bread.

What Can You Serve With Mackerel Pate?

There are so many different things you can serve up with this pate! Try it in a platter with capers, pickled cucumber, fresh rocket and melba toast. You can also eat it as a great sandwich filler with some fresh lettuce. It’s also great served with some crudites for a lower carb option.

Notes

  • I have tried this with only sour cream, and a blend of sour cream and cream cheese and both are delicious – the cream cheese makes a milder and creamier flavour but feel free to use only sour cream if you prefer
