Iced Tea Earl Grey Lemon

Earl Grey is my favourite black tea blend. If you’ve not had it before you really should try it. It’s particularly popular in the UK where it originated. (Although there is some debate as to whether the tea was actually invented in China and gifted to Lord Grey). The tea has such a lovely sweet flavour as it is mixed with bergamot which is a type of orange. While I’ve drunk this tea hot for years, I’ve only recently tried it in this Lemon Earl Grey Iced Tea recipe – it’s absolutely fab!

How do you make lemon earl grey iced tea?

This recipe couldn’t be easier. You simply boil some water with the tea bag, lemon & some sweetener in the pot. Leave to infuse and cool for an hour and then pour over ice. It takes about 5 minutes of ‘hands on’ time so not really much longer than making a hot cup of tea.

Can you keep homemade iced tea in the fridge?

Yes but I would try and drink it within 24 hours. The flavour can start to change after that. Plus if you are making it with lemon, like in this recipe, then it might be worth removing the lemon after the first few hours as otherwise it can get quite bitter.

Some sources do say to only keep iced tea in the fridge for up too 8 hours. I have struggled to find the rationale for that in my research. I can tell you that I have personally kept this for maybe a day and a half and still drunk it and it tasted fine. Perhaps the lemon helps preserve things?

Ingredients

Scale

  • 2 earl grey tea bags

  • optional: mint to garnish

Instructions

1. Add all ingredients into a saucepan and place over a high heat.

2. Bring to the boil and then remove from the heat and leave to infuse for 1 hour

3. To serve, pour into a tall glass over ice. Alternatively store in a jar in the fridge for up to 3 days

Notes

  1. You can replace the lemon with fruit for a fruit infused tea – yum!
  2. I generally find most earl grey blends are fairly mild compared the the black tea I’m used to in the UK. Therefore I like this with 2 tea bags – you can use less or more as per your own tastes.
  3. You can use sugar instead of the artificial sweetener, but the calorie count will be higher (obviously). Or you can omit the sweetener altogether if you prefer.
