Gummies are a favorite sweet treat of kids and adults alike. While it can be convenient just to grab a bag of them off the supermarket shelf, making your own gummies at home can be surprisingly easy.
With few ingredients and steps, anyone can learn how to make gummies. This low-hassle recipe could be a rainy-day activity to do with kids.

Gummy Ingredients
- 1 cup of your favorite Jello powder (this equals 4 - 85 gram packages)
- 4 tablespoons unflavored gelatin powder (also spelled gelatine)
- 2 cups warm water
- vegetable oil - This is used to lightly grease the mold and help the gummies to release once they are set.
Gummies are typically made with a liquid like water or juice, flavor, sugar and gelatin. In this recipe, Jello powder provides most of these components, but water and extra gelatin are added to help them set up.
Equipment
While there isn't much equipment involved, you will need a candy mold of your choosing.
Tweaks
- Vegan: You can choose a gelatin alternative that is vegetarian and vegan friendly like agar agar or Vegan Jel. You can see and control exactly what goes into your snack.
- Alcoholic: Why not spike them with a bit of booze for an adult twist? Just remember to clean your dishes before making a second flavor.
- Mold shape: This recipe is simple, but allows room for lots of creativity. While bears are the most well-known gummy candy shape, you don't have to be limited by it. There are loads of different shaped silicone trays available for you to have fun with.
- Flavor: You can choose any flavors you want. There are many different jelly flavors, and you can even try a sugar free alternative.
Step #1. Mix the Powders Together
Mix the Jello powder with the unflavored gelatin in a small bowl.
COOKING TIP: If you prefer sour gummies, try adding up to 2 teaspoons of food grade citric acid with the powders.
Step #2. Add Warm Water
Add the warm water to the powders.
Step #3. Mix Well
Mix carefully using a spoon, making sure that it has dissolved completely.
Tip: You want to mix slowly to avoid creating bubbles.
Step #4. Pour into Mold
Very lightly oil your favorite shaped silicone molds with vegetable oil. Place the molds on a baking sheet and use a dropper or measuring cup with a spout to pour the mixture into the molds.
Note: There are many molds that come with the droppers. If you have a small mold, I would suggest using the dropper. They make it a lot easier to transfer the liquid.
Step #5. Chill
Transfer the gummy mold on the baking sheet to the refrigerator and chill for 12 hours or overnight (until they have fully set). Remove the sweets from the mold.
Step #6. Serve
The gummies are ready to be eaten!
Top Tip
If you want your gummies to be more chewy, after they have been refrigerated, lay them out on wax paper or a baking rack and allow them to air-dry for a day or two. They will become firmer and chewier!
Storage
- In the cupboard: The gummies can be stored in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place like a cupboard or pantry. They should last up to 3 to 5 days.
- In the fridge: You can also store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

I don't have flavor jello where I'm at,so how can I make the flavor jello from scratch?

Jello powder is mainly gelatin and sugar with some flavor and color, so you could make your own with those ingredients or go with a recipe for gummies that uses simply fruit juice with gelatin powder. I believe there is approximately 12.5 grams of gelatin in 1 (85 g)box of jello powder. I hope this gives you something to work with!
