That is what we are making today! Try these baked tortilla strips if you love your chili, Mexican soup, or salad, or like to snack. They are a great topping for these recipes. So, are you ready to learn how to bake tortilla strips? Let’s get started!
What You Need For This Recipe
To make your favorite strips you only need a handful of ingredients. Have the following ready when you start:
- Tortillas – you can make these strips with either flour tortillas or corn tortillas
- Vegetable oil – to let the seasoning stick to the tortilla use oil or cooking spray. Tortillas also crisp up when covered with oil
- Seasoning – use your favorite seasoning. I use fajita seasoning for this recipe
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Tortilla Strips
- To make this snack you start with preheating the oven to 400℉/200℃. Then line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Take a cutting board and put the corn tortillas or flour tortillas on top. You can either spray each tortilla with cooking spray or brush vegetable oil on both sides of the tortillas.
- Then sprinkle your favorite spice blend on the tortillas. Use a brush or fingers to distribute the seasoning on the tortillas. I find that using my fingers works best but you can also use a brush.
- Stack the tortillas and cut them into ½-inch strips. Add the strips to the baking tray, and prevent the strips from overlapping so they can cook evenly. Bake them for 5-10 minutes.
- Then open the oven, take the baking tray out of the oven, and toss the strips. Return the baking tray to the oven. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until desired crispness.
- Take them out of the oven. Either serve them warm or let them cool completely if you want to store them for later use.
Tortilla Strips Recipe
Baking tortilla strips is so easy and tastes way better than anything you can buy in the store. This recipe is also very cheap to make.
Whether you make corn tortillas or flour tortillas yourself or buy tortillas in the store.
You can make these with just tortillas and an oven but to make them taste even better you can sprinkle the chip strips with your favorite seasoning like homemade fajita seasoning.
Instead of frying them in oil, these go in the oven. They may not color as evenly compared to deep-fried but the taste is so good you will love it.
How To Store Baked Tortilla Strips
The best way to store these crispy strips is to either store them in a Ziploc bag or an airtight container. Let the strips cool completely before storing else you get moisture inside your bag or container resulting in soft strips, which is not what you want.
- Room temperature – you can preserve them for at least a week or longer. They stay nice and crisp as long as you close the resealable bag or food container
- Freezer – want to store them longer store them in the freezer. Put them in a freezer-friendly food container or resealable bag and store them for up to 3 months
How To Revive Stale Tortilla Strips?
So, you left your tortilla chip strips out too long and they have gone soft and stale. Do not throw them away because you can easily revive them. Take a look at the various options:
- Oven – preheat your oven to 400℉/200℃ and lay your stale tortilla strips on a parchment-lined baking tray. Put the tray in the oven and bake for at least 5-7 minutes or until crisp. Keep a close watch on your tortilla strips because they can burn very fast
- Air Fryer – you can also revive your tortilla strips in an Air Fryer. Preheat the Air Fryer to 375℉/190℃ and put them in the Air Fryer basket. Put a trivet on top of the strips to prevent them from swirling through your Air Fryer or use an Air Fryer basket with a lid heat for 2-3 minutes
- Deep fry – you can deep fry tortilla strips in a deep fryer. Preferably you deep fry unseasoned strips else the seasoning burns while frying. It only takes a couple of seconds until they are done
- Microwave – you can crisp up your tortilla strips chips in the microwave. Take a plate and line it with a paper towel. Put the strips on top and microwave for 30 seconds. Check to see if they are crispy else extend by 15 seconds
How To Use Baked Tortilla Strips
As mentioned, there are a million ways to use these chip strips. You can use tortilla strips for salads or tortilla strips for soup. You can also put them on top of dishes like:
- Mexican tortilla soup
- Crockpot beef chili
- Avocado tomato salad
- Mexican bean soup
- White chicken chili
- Mexican chicken soup
Are Tortilla Strips Vegan?
In general, they are vegan. If you make tortillas, you control what goes in the tortillas. Some store-bought flour tortillas contain lard or butter so you should stay away from those.
If you follow this recipe and make seasoning and tortillas yourself, these strips are 100% vegan.
Can You Make Gluten-Free Tortilla Strips?
Yes, if you substitute flour tortillas with gluten-free tortillas and follow the recipe instructions you can make these strips gluten-free.
These tortillas are all gluten-free and can be used in this recipe:
- Corn tortillas
- Cassava tortillas
- Rice flour tortillas
