Instant Pot Brown Lentil Soup in 30 mins! Yes please!

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all having an amazing day! We are sharing one of our favorite Instant Pot friendly recipes! F&F: Ammi’s kitchen is thrilled to feature on Simply Meals.  Today, I’ll be sharing an absolutely delicious instant pot brown lentil soup/daal, garnished with whole spices toasted in oil!

Instant Pot Brown Lentil Soup

Steaming hot lentil soup with an aromatic garnish of whole spices and spiced oil!

Equipment

  • Instant Pot

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown lentils
  • 2 cups water or as needed
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 3-4 dried chili peppers
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • ½ cup oil

Instructions

  • Soak the daal/lentils in warm water
  • Add the water, daal/lentils, salt, chili powder, garlic powder, and coriander powder to the Instant Pot. Set the Instant pot to pressure cooker for 20 minutes.
  • Now, warm the oil on medium-heat., then add the cumin seeds, garlic, and dried chili peppers to the oil. Saute for 1-3 minutes (until garlic is cooked).
  • Once the lentils are cooked, open the vent of the Instant Pot. Pour the tarka/spiced oil over the lentil soup, stir, and ENJOY!

  1. This is something we make a lot at home, with different lentils.The brown ones are creamier and we sometimes add ghee or cream to it too. Your lentil soup looks like a chef’s dream… So beautiful and delicious looking.

  3. Daal is a childhood favourite for me. My husband loves Daal too so I like to make it atleast thrice a week. I use pressure cooker for quick cooking but i think slow cooking makes food taste even better. I love a good spice saute for all daal and lentil soups.

  4. This looks fantastic Felicia – I love eating lentils but the truth is that I have never been really good at cooking them. I have a slow cooker but not in instant pot or pressure cooker. How would you advise I go about making this is in my slow cooker?

  6. Hi Felicia. Ah why do you make me read about soup when it’s cold and raining outside! ? I love soup and lentil soup is very nice especially with pieces of meat in between. Adding this to my SOUO LIST?

  7. I make dal every other day and it’s a favorite at home, besides being a great source of protein for us as vegetarians. We cook it in the pressure cooker. Dal is great as a side dish for rice or rotis. I especially love it with hot rice and ghee – a childhood comfort food with a side of vegetables. Thank you Fatima and Felicia!
