So easy to make and so tasty. These fruit empanadas will fly off the table. They are made with a blueberry cream cheese mixture and then they are deep-fried. So, are you ready to learn how to make dessert empanadas with blueberry? Let’s get started
What You Need For This Recipe
To make this dessert recipe you need only a limited number of ingredients. You can make the empanada dough yourself or buy store-bought dough:
- Empanada dough – you can make these with empanada dough for frying you can also use regular empanada dough or use store-bought pie dough
- Cream cheese – the filling is made with soft cream cheese
- Blueberries – I prefer to use fresh blueberries but you can also use frozen. When you use frozen do not thaw but use them in cream cheese. Frozen blueberries contain more water compared to fresh berries
- Oil – vegetable oil for baking. You can use e.g. sunflower oil

If you have a sweet tooth add some granulated sugar to the fruit mixture. Want a bit of freshness then add lemon juice to taste.
How To Make Dessert Empanadas With Blueberry
- Make the empanada dough for frying or use store-bought pie crust. Cut out the empanada shells using an empanada mold. Now take a bowl and add the cream cheese and stir it loose with a spoon.
- Add the blueberries and stir the blueberries through the cream cheese. If you want it sweeter add sugar to taste. Want to use lemon juice for freshness now is the time to add it.
- Take about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese mixture and put it in the middle of the empanada discs. Fold the empanadas and cover the filling with the dough. Seal the edges of the empanada twisting the edges close.
- Then preheat vegetable oil in a big pot until hot (about 350℉/175℃). Fry the blueberry empanadas for about 1 minute per side. Do not crowd the pan and leave some space for the empanadas to brown.

Empanadas are amazing, either savory or sweet, and these dessert empanadas with blueberry are no exception. We love empanadas so that calls for a sweet dessert recipe.
Crunchy fried dough, a little sweet from the fruit in perfect balance with the cream cheese. You can also bake them in the oven just like these sweet apple empanadas.
If you bake them, brush the turnovers with egg wash, and after you baked them sprinkle with granulated sugar on top.

How To Store Sweet Empanadas
You have several options to store sweet empanadas:
- Refrigerator – you can store empanadas in the fridge. You can make the sweet empanadas and not bake them yet. Put them on a small baking sheet and wrap them with cling film. Make certain the empanadas are not touching else they will stick together which can cause tears. You can also fry the empanadas and store them in the fridge. Let the empanadas cool completely before refrigerating. You can store them in a bowl wrapped with cling film or in an airtight food container. In both cases, you can store them for up to 3 days
- Freezer – if you want to keep them longer you can store them in the freezer. You can store them on a baking sheet and let them freeze for 3 hours before putting them in a Ziploc bag or food container. You can store them for up to 3 months
How To Reheat Sweet Empanadas
You can reheat these sweet empanadas in several ways
- Deep fryer – you can reheat these empanadas by deep frying them shortly. Heat the oil to 350℉/175℃ and add the empanadas to the oil. The empanadas do not need to brown, so you can heat them for a couple of minutes
- Oven – you can also reheat the sweet empanadas by heating them in the oven. Preheat your oven to 375℉/190℃ and warm them in the oven for about 5-7 minutes
- Air Fryer – like the oven, you can also reheat the sweet empanadas in an Air Fryer. Preheat the Air Fryer for 3 minutes to 375℉ and warm them for about 5 minutes
- Microwave – you can also warm them in the microwave but you will lose the crunchiness. Warm in bursts of 30 seconds and check to see if the empanadas are warm else repeat
Serve Empanadas With
You can eat these sweet empanadas solo but you can make them even better. You can:
- Icing sugar – sprinkle some icing sugar on the empanadas
- Syrup – pour some syrup on them
- Melted chocolate – melt some chocolate in the microwave or au bain-marie so you can dip your empanada in the hot choco
- Caramel – date caramel is a great option to serve these dessert empanadas with
- Whipped cream – whip up some cream and serve it on top of your empanada

Dessert Empanadas With Blueberry

Ingredients

- ½ - ¾ cup blueberries
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Make the empanada dough for frying

Notes
If you like your cream cheese sweet you can add sugar but I found the filling to have the right sweetness
