If you have a packet of puff pastry lying around in the freezer this is a great time to take them out and make this recipe.
All you need is some apple pie filling which you can make from scratch.

What Is An Apple Turnover?
In case you do not know, an apple turnover is a pastry dessert filled with pieces of sweetened apple filling.
The pastry is folded to cover the filling. Usually, the top of the turnover is sprinkled with sugar or decorated with icing.

So, what do you need for this recipe? Take a look at the list of ingredients which is really short actually:
- Puff pastry
- Granny Smith apple
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
- Arrowroot
- Brown sugar
- Lemon juice
- Granulated sugar
- Water
How To Make Apple Turnovers
To make this recipe start with the apple pie filling. Peel the apple, cut it into wedges, and then in thin slices.
Sprinkle the apple with lemon juice.
Put a small pan on the stove and heat water and add the arrowroot and whisk until the arrowroot is dissolved.
Add the brown sugar and cinnamon to the pan and whisk until all is combined.
Now add the sliced apples to the saucepan and let it simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes until the apples are soft and tender.
Take off the heat and stir to let it cool. Preheat the oven to 400℉/200℃ and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Put the puff pastry squares on the baking tray. Scoop 2 tablespoons of apple pie filling on the pastry.
Leave at least an inch of pastry free to seal the turnover. Brush all the edges with water and seal the turnover into a triangle.
Then brush the top with water as well and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes.
Take them out of the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
How Do You Seal Puff Pastry Edges?
There are a number of ways to seal the edges of the puff pastry turnovers:
- Water – brush all the edges with warm water. Fold the pastry and press the edges tightly together
- Egg wash – whisk and egg and add one teaspoon to turn it into egg wash. Take a brush and brush egg wash on both layers and then seal the edges, pressing them together
- Fork – fold the turnovers and press them together with the tines of a fork, just like you would seal a piecrust

How Do You Keep Apple Turnovers Fresh?

Can You Freeze Turnovers?
After you cool the turnovers, they can be frozen. Do not put icing or other toppings on them.
Put them lightly wrapped in aluminum foil and a freezer-friendly container or a freezer bag.
You can keep it in the freezer for 1-2 months.
How To Reheat Apple Turnovers?
When you store the apple turnovers in the fridge, let them get to room temperature.
If frozen, let them thaw at room temperature first, then preheat the oven to 400℉/200℃. Bake on a baking sheet for 5-7 minutes.
Do not reheat turnovers in the microwave or let them thaw in the microwave if you want to keep the puff pastry flaky and crunchy on the outside.
When you reheat them in the microwave, your crunchy, flaky turnover will go soggy and soft, which is not what you want for this tasty treat.
