A good day start with a good warm bowl of porridge, it’s a must in all Caribbean household. Porridge is the number one breakfast throughout the islands, there are various delicious types of porridges like this one. One of my new faves is this amazing Jamaican Style Green Banana Porridge that I have to share.

Obviously green bananas are the star of this recipe, better known as fig in the Caribbean. They are used in various different ways such as in soups, as a side to a savoury dish or in a porridge like this.

Not only is this recipe bomb but it is also easy to make. You don’t need to be slaving yourself over the stove for hours, you just need a good blender.

Unlike ripe bananas, green bananas are hard which means that you will be unable to mash them so you will need to pop them into your blender. I like to blend the bananas with the evaporated milk and spices. Indeed, blending them with the milk resulted in a smooth base and made the process easier.

Along with being delicious, I must say that this porridge is unique because of its taste. The taste is unique because of the fig, it gives it an amazing flavor and it will leave you wanting for more. So you will definitely need to make a huge pot.

Once you get the base blended up good, it’s smooth sailing from there. You just need to pour the base into the pot and add the rest ingredients. However, you must pay attention to the porridge and stir it constantly. You may need to add more water/milk if it gets too thick.

Before diving into the recipe, I thought I should share some TIPS & TRICKS with you guys:

TIPS & TRICKS
  • Peeling the bananas: Before cooking the porridge itself you need to peel the bananas. It isn’t as hard as you may think but it requires a certain technique. First you need to cut the ends of the banana. Then you need to slice off the skin. And finally you will need to cut the bananas into chunks. It’s that simple.
  • Spices: Obviously the spices are just as important as the figs. I kept it simple with just cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and I added a little twist by adding allspice and almond essence. You can also add a little bit of ground ginger if you like for a little kick. But I suggest keeping the spices simple so the bananas would dominate and not the spices.
