baked brie with onions

Baked Brie with Balsamic Onion Jam is an easy appetizer that’s an absolute crowd pleaser! Hot, melted brie cheese is topped with sweet balsamic onion jam and served with crostini!

Why we love this baked brie appetizer

This baked brie with balsamic onion jam is rich and creamy, and simply elegant! The best part is it only takes a couple ingredients and 25 minutes to make! You can never go wrong with melted cheese, either!

Key ingredients for this baked brie recipe

Brie

Because of its mild flavor and versatility, brie is the default choice for any fantastic charcuterie or cheese platter. However, it truly shines when paired with something acidic, like balsamic vinegar!  That makes this Baked Brie with Balsamic Onion Jam a match made in cheese heaven! I haven’t ever met anyone who doesn’t like an ooey-gooey appetizer like this! No need to remove the rind before baking, either!  It is perfectly edible and you actually don’t notice it much after your brie is baked!  Just stick it in an oven-safe dish and pop it in the oven!

Onions

Any onion will caramelize, so any will do!  I chose sweet yellow onions because they tend to caramelize the most readily and be the most versatile in dishes. Slice them about 1/4 inch thick before sauteeing.

Balsamic Vinegar

Traditional balsamic vinegar comes from the town of Modena in Italy. The process of making it is complex but results in a mild and sweet flavor. Don’t substitute another vinegar here – it won’t be the same!

How do you make Balsamic Onion Jam?

Balsamic onion jam is so easy to make and adds a sweet, rich, caramelized goodness to warm, creamy brie!

Start by slicing the onions about 1/4″ thick.  Heat olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan. I used a cast-iron skillet but any heavy saucepan will do.  Cook over medium-high heat stirring only occasionally so that you get all that goodness from the caramelization.

After the onions are good and caramelized, which should take about 10-15 minutes, combine the balsamic vinegar and sugar in a small bowl.  Stir together with a whisk and add to the onions.  You’ll get that nice sizzle from your hot skillet and the balsamic vinegar will bubble up.  Cook it until the liquid becomes thickened and syrupy. Remove from the pan and set aside!  It’s that easy!

In addition to topping baked brie, this balsamic onion jam is the perfect topping for burgers, sandwiches and so much more!

What kind of onions should I use when making balsamic onion jam?

Any onion will caramelize, so any will do!  I chose sweet yellow onions because they tend to caramelize the most readily and be the most versatile in dishes. For this recipe, I used Sunions, which are the first tearless onions! Sunions are grown through an all-natural cross-breeding program to create a sweet, mild onion that won’t make you tear up!

So that means the only tears that will be shed this Superbowl is for the losing team 🙂
