  • Orange juice – adds a slightly sweet flavor to the dough
  • Butter – you can use regular butter or plant-based butter
  • Baking powder – gives the dough a fluffy texture when it is fried
  • Salt – to add flavor to the dough
  • Sugar – optional only add if you want a sweet dough

How To Make Empanada Dough For Frying

  1. To make this recipe take a kitchen machine and add the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if you are using it). Pulse the kitchen machine to mix the ingredients.
  2. Take the butter and cut it into small pieces. Add the butter to the kitchen machine. Pulse the machine until the butter and flour are mixed and it will have a sand-like texture. Now it is time to add sparkling water.
  3. Run the kitchen machine and add the water. Then you can add the orange juice. Pulse and mix until the dough starts to come together.
  4. Take the dough ball out of the kitchen machine, knead lightly by hand, and add some flour to prevent the dough from sticking.
  5. Wrap the dough in some cling film and set it aside so it can rest at room temperature. If you are not using it straight away put it in the fridge.
  6. Make the discs using a rolling pin and an empanada mold to cut out the circles. You can also use a small plate and cut the empanada.
  7. If you own a tortilla press cut balls of about 1.5 to 2 oz and press them in the tortilla press. Use a rolling pin to roll them into thin discs.
  8. Fill them with your favorite savory or sweet filling. Close real tight as you are frying the empanadas and you do not want to leak the filling.

Empanada Dough For Frying

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup sparkling water add more if needed
  • ½ cup butter (Note 1)
  • 4 tablespoons of orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar – optional if you want to make a sweet dough

Instructions

  1. Add the flour, salt, sugar (if using), and baking powder in a food processor
  2. Pulse to combine the ingredients
  3. Cut the butter in pieces, add and pulse until mixed
  4. Add ½ cup of water the sparkling water and the orange juice. Add more water if needed until you have an elastic dough
  5. Form a ball with the dough and knead lightly on a floured board
  6. Place the dough in a plastic wrap and let rest at room temperature for about a half-hour
  7. Make the empanada discs or shells with an empanada mold, use a plate or a tortilla press
  8. Ready to use

Note 1 - Use unsalted butter in this recipe Note 2 - Make 12-15 medium-sized empanadas or about 20-24 small empanadas
