Delicious Dutch Apple Pie Recipe
Today I’m sharing the apple pie recipe I inherited from my mom, which she got it from her mom as well.
Just like this apple pie recipe I also have a Dutch butter cake and pound cake recipe from my mom.
As these contain so much sugar, I do not make them a lot but this apple pie recipe is made regularly because it is really delicious.
It instantly makes you feel better because the smell of those soft apples warming your house makes you feel good.
Dutch Apple Pie Ingredients
Take make this apple pie recipe take a look at the list of ingredients you need to have on hand and put them on your grocery list.
Have the following ready when you start:
- Self-rising flour
- Butter
- Caster sugar
- Egg
- Vanilla extract or vanilla sugar
- Salt
Filling
- Sweet and sour apples
- Granulated sugar
- Lemon juice
- Cinnamon
- Raisins
How To Make A Dutch Apple Pie
To make this apple pie recipe start with the dough. Take a large bowl, take the butter, and cut it into small pieces.
Beat the egg and add ⅔ of the egg to the butter. Add the vanilla extract before you add the flour, pinch of salt, and sugar.
Now knead the ingredients into a consistent dough by hand. Do not overwork the dough. As soon as you have a consistent dough put it in the refrigerator.
Well, the raisins by pouring warm water on the raisins. Set aside for 10 minutes.
Now peel the apples and then finely slice. Pour lemon juice on the apples and stir so the apples will not turn brown.
Sprinkle the sugar on the apple and stir it through the apples. Then sprinkle the cinnamon on top of the apples and stir with a spoon.
Now drain the raisins and pat dry. Add them to the apple filling as well before you set it aside.
Take the dough out of the fridge. Then cut ⅔ of the dough, flour a big cutting board, and roll out the dough.
Now coat the baking form (10 inches) with cooking spray or butter and put the dough in the baking form.
Press tight on the bottom and the side of the baking form. Now pour the apple mixture into the springform.
Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into long strips. Braid the strips into a wicker pattern.
Brush the egg wash on the dough on top of the apple filling so it can get a golden glow when it is baked.
Preheat the oven to 350℉ and bake the Dutch apple pie between 60-75 minutes or golden brown.
Take the pie out of the oven.
Let it cool completely before removing the springform. Cut in 10-12 wedges and serve.
Best Apples For Apple Pie
The best apples you can choose for apple pie are sweet and or sour apples.
In general, the best apples for apple pie are red-colored apples. So, when buying apples for this pie choose one of the following:
- Granny Smith
- Honey crisp
- Golden Delicious
- Jonagold
- Jonathan
- Braeburn
- Rome apples
The Best Apple Trick For Apple Pie
As apples get soft when they are baked apples will shrink inside the apple pie. Usually, the middle of an apple pie dips a little because of these shrunken apples.
So, to prevent this, stack the sliced apples in a small mound before you braid the strips of dough on top of the pie. This will result in a leveled apple pie.
Should I Egg Wash My Apple Pie?
If you want a golden-brown apple pie then use an egg wash. For egg wash take 1 well-beaten egg and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to the beaten egg.
The water will lighten the golden color of the apple. If you want a darker, shinier pie, then you can substitute the water for cream or milk.
How To Store Apple Pie
There are a number of ways to store your apple pie:
- Room temperature – Baked apple pie can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 days. Leave the apple pie in the springform and cover it with foil or plastic wrap
- Refrigerator – keep apple pie in the fridge for up to 4 or 5 days again cover it with foil or plastic wrap
- Freezer – you can keep the apple pie in the freezer. This is my favorite way as I slice the apple pie and wrap every portion in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw and you have a slice of delicious apple pie

Ingredients
- 400 grams of self-rising flour (0.9 lb)
- 1 egg (⅔ for the dough and ⅓ for the coating)
- 175 grams of butter (6 oz)
- 175 grams of caster sugar (6 oz)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 7 grams of vanilla sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Filling
- 2 pounds sweet and sour apples
- 75 grams of raisins (2.5 oz)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 20 grams of granulated sugar (0.7 oz)
- 3 teaspoons cinnamon
Instructions
- Cut butter into small pieces. Beat the egg and add ⅔ to the butter in a large bowl. Add the vanilla extract, pinch of salt, caster sugar, and flour
- Knead the dough by hand into a consistent dough and put it in the refrigerator
- Put the raisins in warm water and set aside for 10 minutes
- Peel the apples and cut them into thin slices. Stir the lemon, granulated sugar, and cinnamon through the apple
- Dry the raisins and also add them to the apple filling
- Take the dough out of the fridge. Cut ⅔ of the dough, flour the kitchen counter and roll out the dough
- Coat the baking form (10 inches) with cooking spray or butter and put the dough in the baking form. Put the apple mixture on the dough
- Roll the remaining dough and cut it into long strips. Braid the strips into a wicker pattern
- Brush the remaining egg on the braided dough
- Preheat the oven to 350℉/175℃ and bake the apple pie between 60-75 minutes
- Take the pie out of the oven and let it cool completely before removing the springform
- Cut in 10-12 wedges and serve
