How To Make Baked French Toast Casserole
To make this casserole dish take a baking dish like this durable stainless steel baking dish with mirror polished exterior and brush with butter or with a cooking spray.
Take about 9 or 10 slices of bread, I used whole wheat sandwich bread. Cut the bread in half on the diagonal. Set aside.
Take a large measuring cup or bowl. Take the eggs and whisk before you add the milk and cream. Stir again.
Then add the cinnamon, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Keep stirring until well combined. Dip the bread triangles in the custard and put them in the stainless steel baking dish.
Pour the remaining custard over the bread and let the custard soak for at least 20 minutes. You can put the dish in the fridge and let it sit overnight.
In the meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350℉. Then cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Take out of the oven and remove the foil.
Bake for another 15 to 20 minutes or until the bread is nice and brown and the custard set.
Decorate with icing sugar and berries like blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries. Serve your breakfast casserole directly.
Why Is My Baked French Toast Soggy?
The only reason is that the bread-to-custard ratio is incorrect. You have too much custard so the custard can’t set.
If your bread is drowning in custard take the excess custard out. You can leave the casserole longer in the oven but keep it covered longer to prevent the bread from burning.
The bread should be crispy and browned and the inside should be creamy.
Can French Toast Casserole Be Reheated?
You can absolutely reheat baked French toast casserole. If you have leftover casserole the best way is to reheat it in the oven.
- Oven – Heat your oven to 325℉ and cover the oven dish with foil and heat for about 20-25 minutes
- Microwave – you can also heat the dish in the microwave. Cut the casserole into small portions like 2 or 3 slices of bread. Microwave a portion for 2 to 3 minutes
Should You Toast Bread Before Making French Toast?
It is not necessary to toast the bread before you make the baked French toast casserole but it is advisable to use stale bread.
You want dry bread with not too much moisture in it. When you leave slices of bread out on a slicing board for a couple of hours it will dry out as well.
What Is The Purpose Of Vanilla Extract In Baking?
This recipe contains vanilla extract but why do you use vanilla or vanilla extract in sweet baked goods?
The answer is simple vanilla or vanilla extract enhances all the other flavors in the recipe. It gives the recipe depth.
Without it, baked goods taste flat and bland.
