What You Need For This Recipe
If you are wondering what Peri Peri seasoning is made of then take a look at this list of ingredients. Most likely you have the majority in your kitchen cabinet.
The African Birdseye Chili pepper might be a challenge to find. Look at your local international grocery store like an Asian or Mexican food market.
Otherwise, you can easily substitute this chili pepper for other options. Get the following:
- Paprika – use regular mild paprika it is slightly sweet
- Garlic powder – savory flavor
- Onion powder – has a sweet flavor and adds depth to the seasoning
- Dried oregano – slightly bitter and pungent flavor
- Ginger powder – bitter-sweet taste, spicy, peppery, and warm/hot
- Ground cardamom – adds a warm, sweet, and spicy flavor with hints of lemon, and mint
- Ground Piri-Piri pepper – to add heat to the seasoning you can also add malagueta pepper or cayenne pepper instead
- Salt – an essential ingredient that enhances the flavors of the other herbs and spices
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Piri Piri Seasoning
- To make this recipe take a small bowl and measure all the spices as described in the ingredients list. Put the spices in the bowl. Take a spoon and stir the ingredients for at least 1 minute to make certain that the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Instead of putting all the spices you can put them in a blender and pulse a couple of times to combine the spice mix.
- This works very well if you are making this seasoning in bulk. When done spoon the seasoning into a glass jar and store it in a dark cabinet.
Spicy Spice Mix
If you ever go to Portugal you have to try their Piri Piri chicken it is legendary. This is due to the seasoning.
It is a great combination of flavor and spiciness and works well with chicken. If you visited the Tortilla Channel before you know I love making seasoning.
It is not only really easy to make but you can adjust it to your taste and it is also really cheap especially if you buy spices in bulk. Spices can be preserved for a long time so perfect to make the spice mix.
So is it Peri Peri or Piri Piri?
The answer is both Peri Peri and Piri-Piri and even pili-pili are used in Portuguese and several African languages for the African bird’s-eye chili pepper.
In Swahili Piri-Piri means pepper-pepper.
Piri Piri is used predominately in Portugal whereas Peri Peri and pili pili are various ways this seasoning is pronounced in parts of Africa.
How Hot Is Piri Piri?
If you are using the African Birdseye chili pepper you have to be aware that it is really hot. If you are not used to spicy seasoning start with half of what the ingredient list shows.
You can always add more Piri Piri pepper once you taste the result.
How Long Can You Store Homemade Seasoning?
You can easily store your homemade seasoning for half a year or longer. Just do not store the seasoning in direct sunlight or a warm spot.
This will impact the color and flavor of the seasoning as it will turn hard in the sun. Keep it in a dark and dry place like your kitchen cabinet or kitchen pantry.
