One bite of these and you’ll be obsessed! Flavorful sweet potatoes are coated in an irresistible cinnamon honey butter, baked to tender perfection, and finished with an optional oat pecan topping. A classic side dish that can flex from everyday dinner to a holiday feast.

For an everyday dinner, pair these with grilled pork chops or chicken. Use a savory spice rub on the meat to perfectly balance the flavors!

Sweet potatoes are one of nature’s ultimate foods: delicious, nutritious, and incredibly versatile. They work in sheet pan dinners, chili, tortilla soup, you name it. But sometimes you just want to keep things simple, and a straightforward dish of baked sweet potatoes are just the way to do it.

To be sure, sweet potatoes are a classic Thanksgiving side, but unlike some dishes, there’s little consensus on the “best” or “traditional” way to prepare them. Mashed and whipped into a tooth-achingly sweet casserole? Maybe with pecans or marshmallows on top? Or perhaps roasted with elaborate mix-ins and steps?

While all of those options may have their place, if you’re looking for something simple, sweet but not cavity inducing, and delicious, this is the recipe for you. Even better, you needn’t wait for Thanksgiving to enjoy these. We’ve had them several times already this fall, and they go as beautifully with an everyday meal as they do with a special occasion feast.

Baked sweet potatoes: ingredients and how-to

Most of the ingredients are contained in the name of the recipe, so this one is easy. If you’re standing at the grocery store and hoping to make this, be sure you have:

  • Sweet potatoes, obviously. Not yams! If you’re feeding a crowd, 2.5 pounds of potatoes should serve at least 6. For a smaller family dinner, obviously you can buy less!
  • Butter.
  • Honey.
  • Cinnamon.
  • Salt.
  • Pecans, old-fashioned oats, and brown sugar. These ingredients are optional, needed only if you want to finish the sweet potatoes with a subtle crunchy topping. The dish is delicious with or without this, so it’s just a matter of personal preference.
Chopped sweet potatoes, ready to toss and bake.

And the process couldn’t be simpler. The most time-consuming part is peeling and chopping the sweet potatoes, but even that can be sort of zen, at least I think so. 🙂 Be sure to chop them into relatively small and uniform pieces, so they cook at the same rate.

Pour over a tantalizing syrupy combination of melted butter, honey, and cinnamon. Toss to coat the potatoes, and slide the whole baking pan right into the oven.

Why baking vs. roasting

This is a small thing, but for those interested in learning more about the technicalities, we’ve had great results baking these sweet potatoes at a temperature of about 350 degrees F.

Roasting vegetables normally implies a higher temperature – something like you would have in this recipe for roasted asparagus or broccolini. It’s a phenomenal technique for coaxing great flavor from veggies, but in this instance, such a high temperature might cause the honey to scorch or even burn, so slightly lower and slower is the better option.
