These avocado turkey burgers are just kind of my favorite. They combine everything I love into one awesome handheld meal. Avocado (because everything is better with avocado) helps keep these burgers moist and delicious. I normally loathe heated avocado, but it’s a different story altogether in these awesome burgers.

Instead of topping them with cheese, we’re adding the shredded cheese inside them. It helps hold the burgers together and gives them an awesome flavor. Pizza mozzarella, Monterey Jack, and Pepper Jack cheese would all taste amazing in this recipe.

How to make this turkey avocado burgers recipe:

These burgers are so simple to make. Add all of the ingredients to a medium bowl, and mix to combine. Once it’s fully mixed, form into patties. When you’re forming the patties, make sure that the thickness is consistent all the way through. It’s easy to make the edges thinner than the middle, but that will lead to uneven cooking.

The ground turkey in this recipe could easily be swapped for ground chicken to make amazing chicken avocado burgers.

Turkey burgers on a grill pan.

I prefer to make these burgers on a grill pan because the edges will get a little dark and crispy from the cheese. If you see the outside turning a golden to darkish brown, it’s just from the cheese, so don’t worry. You don’t want it to turn black though (that means it’s burnt).

Cook the turkey burgers until a meat thermometer reads 165 F in the center of the burger.

These burgers are really brought to the next level with my Chipotle Lime Sour Cream Sauce. It’s creamy, a little spicy, and a little tangy from the lime juice. It pairs perfectly with the avocado in the burgers, and creates a great Mexican inspired turkey burger.

To make this recipe gluten free:

If you’re preparing this for someone who follows a gluten free diet, replace the bread crumbs with gluten free bread crumbs. Serve the burgers on gluten free buns. This brand is so delicious!

To make this recipe keto or low carb:

If you’re preparing this for someone who follows a keto or low carb diet, omit the breadcrumbs. The egg and mozzarella will hold the burger together without the breadcrumbs. Serve the burgers without buns or in a lettuce wrap.

What you’ll need:

This recipe is pretty straightforward – you only need two tools to make it.

The first tool you need is either a good grill pan or a good heavy bottomed skillet.

A quick tip – when you’re shopping for grill pans, avoid the ones with really deep wells between each grill line. All the oil pools in there. That makes it hard to cook the food evenly and also makes the pan prone to smoking. This is the pan I love and I never have that problem with it.

The second tool you’ll need is a box grater. This one is super versatile and durable.

Avocado turkey burgers are the most delicious and moist turkey burgers. Top them with chipotle lime cream sauce for amazing Mexican inspired burgers!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 avocado (chopped)
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • ½ cup panko bread crumbs (optional, gluten free if necessary or omit if low carb)
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ¼ cup minced onion
  • 1 cup shredded pizza mozzarella
  • 1 egg
  • 8 burger buns
  • 8 leaves butter lettuce
  • 8 slices beefsteak tomato
  • 1 batch Chipotle Sour Cream

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground turkey, avocado, garlic, panko bread crumbs, salt, pepper, onion, mozzarella, and egg.
  2. Form into 8 evenly sized patties (being careful to make the thickness in the center and at the edges consistent).
  3. Heat a lidded grill pan over medium heat. Once the pan is preheated, cook the burgers for 10 minutes, flip them, cover them and cook them for 5 more minutes (or until they reach an internal temperature of 165 F). If you’re cooking all the burgers at once, you’ll likely have to cook them in rounds.
  4. Assemble each burger with Chipotle Sour Cream, 1 leaf butter lettuce, 1 slice beefsteak tomato, and 1 Avocado Turkey Burger.

Notes

If you’re cooking this in a skillet instead of a grill pan, the cook time will be much faster (closer to 5 minutes, flip, and cook for 5 more minutes or until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 F).
