You can make these on the weekend and have them on your lunch table in no time. Wow, your family with the best bagels they ever tasted. So are you ready to learn how to make homemade bagels? Let’s get started!
What You Need For This Recipe
To make this bagel recipe you need a limited number of ingredients. You need the following on your grocery shopping or from your kitchen pantry:
- Flour – we use self-raising flour
- Yogurt – use non-fat Greek yogurt for this recipe. Do not use regular yogurt, it will be too sticky
- Egg – we use egg white to brush the crust of the bagels. A whole egg works as well
Want to make self-raising flour then you need the following ingredients:
- All-purpose flour or whole wheat
- Baking powder
- Salt
Note that the full ingredients list, including measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Homemade Bagels
- To make this recipe you start with the dough. Take a large bowl and add the self-raising flour to the bowl. If you want to make self-raising flour combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Then add the yogurt and mix it with the flour with a wooden spoon until thoroughly combined. The dough will look a little crumbly.
- Take a board and dust it with flour. Put the dough on the board and knead it for about 15 turns. The dough should not be sticky and no dough should be on your hands.
- Now preheat the oven to 375℉/190℃ and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Then divide the dough into 4 equal parts. Roll a ball of dough in a thick string about 1 inch and shape it into a doughnut shape when you join the ends so you get a bagel.
- Whisk the egg in a small bowl. Then brush the egg wash on the bagel and sprinkle your favorite seasoning on top.
- Then bake the bagels in the middle of the oven for 25 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving.
Easy Bagel Recipe
To make these easy bagels you need a limited amount of ingredients. Because you do not need to proof the dough this will save you at least half an hour.
I do not know about you but not having to wait longer than needed can be a great thing especially when it concerns a warm bagel.
Another tip that is very useful to know when making bagels is not to over-knead the dough. As opposed to bread dough where you have to knead the dough until elastic this is not what you do for your bagels.
Put the dough together and you are in business.
Most bagel recipes call for cooking the dough in boiling water. The reason why the dough is usually boiled is to give it a hard and chewy exterior.
The good news is this easy bagel recipe doesn’t require any boiling but still will give you a crunchy crust and a soft interior.
Bagel Toppings
Of course, you can eat your bagels plain but they taste even better when you put your favorite toppings on. Looking for some inspiration take a look at the following toppings:
- White sesame seeds
- Black sesame seeds
- Popping sees
- Everything but the bagel seasoning
- Grated cheese
- Flakes of salt
How To Store Your Bagels
When you make bagels, you can make the dough ahead of time and keep it in the fridge.
Once you have baked them there are several ways to store them:
- Outside of the fridge – store them in an air-tight container or ziplock bag for up to two days
- Freezer – you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Put them in a freezer bag or freezer-friendly container. Thaw before using preferably no microwave to keep the original crust. When you thaw in the microwave the bagel will go soft
Serve Your Homemade Bagels With
There are many, many toppings to serve your bagel with. Here is a short list of great toppings:
- Guacamole
- Hummus
- Red pepper hummus
- Cream cheese
- Shrimp salad
- Salmon
- Egg salad
- Black bean salsa
- Tuna salad
- Salmon salad
