Homemade Apple Cobbler Recipe

Fresh apples bake to a warm, sweet filling with a homemade biscuit topping in this easy recipe for apple cobbler. It’s a perfect fall dessert.

When my kids were little, one of my favorite autumn activities with them was to go apple picking. We’d head to local orchards — there were a few — and walk through the rows and rows of trees, picking bags filled with an array of apple varieties.

There are so many.

Inevitably, they’d sample and apple or two along the way, sometimes plunking down right in the middle of a row to eat it. It was adorable.

And while we’d eat many of the apples we bought, others would be used in desserts and sauces. Some of our cooked bounty would even be saved for winter, when the memories of autumn apple picking would warm our hearts.

Those were such good times.

Apple crisp. Apple crumble. Apple brown betty. Apple cake. Apple pie. Apple muffins. There are so many ways to enjoy apples in the autumn.

How do you like to enjoy apples? If you’re looking for an apple dessert to make, apple cobbler — the classic baked dish with a biscuit topping — is a great one to try.

How to make homemade apple cobbler

Fresh apples are the cornerstone of this recipe. Plentiful in pick-you-own orchards and at farmers markets, store-bought ones will be good as well. It’s okay to mix up the varieties, using what you have.

Cube your apples.

Now, it’s time to flavor those apples. Brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg will do the trick. Mix it all up.

Homemade biscuit dough will finish off this recipe. This version has a hint of cinnamon to bring extra richness to the dish.

And then bake it. This homemade apple cobbler is done when the apple mixture bubbles at the edges of the dish and the biscuit topping is golden brown.

Tender and sweet, with hints of savoriness, this is an absolute delight served warm with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream.

Apple Cobbler Recipe

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh apple chunks (do not peel)
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp fresh ground nutmeg

Biscuit topping:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks
  • ⅓ cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a 2-quart square glass baking dish, combine the apple chunks, brown suagr, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir well and spread out.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar and cinnamon. Using either two knives or a pastry cutter, cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it looks like coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk until the dough holds together.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and gently knead until it forms a smooth dough. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a square approximately the size of the glass baking dish. Gently transfer it to top the apples.
  5. Slide the baking dish into the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, until bubbling at the sides and golden on top. This is delightful served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I'm super bummed to miss out on apple picking this year.

But at least I can still make cobbler! I'm doing a blackberry plum one tomorrow!
